Yahoo Groups closing down

To everyone

It's sad that the Yahoo Groups is coming to an end. Some people might be wondering about what to replace them with.

One suggestion, what about a forum instead of Facebook, which a lot of people don't like to use. Remember, for example, for FASA Trek, that Brad Torgersens STSTCS forum site for the Starship combat game is still active here...

https://ststcsolda.proboards.com

I know that regulars in all the FASA Yahoo Groups probably know about the site, as well as the online database, but a forum that is still active would be a fine place to continue the communities built here on all of the FASA Yahoo Groups, if you're not already there.

Save your photos here to image hosting sites, and you can link to them on the forum for display or discussions!

There might be other venues to continue the other communities built up over the years here on Yahoo for the other various Trek game systems (Star Trek LUG, Star Trek Decipher etc) or other Trek interests.

Yes, it was an old method, but some Groups were still in use. So why lose those communities?

Hope this email finds you all safe and well during these troubling Covid times. Peace and long life.

Mark

^^ It should be noted that Yahoo Groups already trimmed its services last year, removing the option to share images and files. Those of us that were part of the Star Trek CCG Yahoo groups have relocated to Facebook and Discord already. Last year, you had the option to download a personal 'data dump' with everything you'd posted. I am not sure if that or a similar service is available at this point, having already downloaded and closed up the group that I had inherited the mod role for. Might be worth looking into if you are interested.

@Tirius

Don't think that option is available now, a!though it doesn't bother me. :)

I found the FasaStarTrekUnivsrseEgroup on Groups.io, and have submitted a join request for it. Any others former Yahoo Groups on there, cos I can't find them. Maybe some of the Groups (Morena Shipyards, Mustaka Shipyards, Anth-Yards, Star Trek LUG, Star Trek RPG Discuss, StarTrekTechnology and others) could say if they have migrated elsewhere if they still want to run such groups?

I've asked the question of said Groups on Yahoo to see if any respond there. That's how I found out a out the one moved to Groups.io

I've found out that certain Yahoo Groups consolidated with TheFasaStarTrekUniverseE-group when they moved to Groups.io. They were Morena Shipyards, Mustaka Shipyards and Fleet Surplus Depot Zed 15.

Good to know. I loved FASA

As I said above, with Yahoo Groups closing finally (on the 15th of December 2020), I found that four of them transferred over to the Groups.io site. These are found under the heading of TheFASAStarTrekUniverseE-group, and include the other Yahoo Groups from Morena Shipyards, Mustaka Shipyards, and Fleet Surplus Depot Zed 15.

The site works very similarly to the old Yahoo Groups, with email messaging and other similar features. Register for the main site, then search for the FASA groups there. You will have to request membership to each of the four Groups.

It looks like a lot of files that were available on the four Yahoo Groups were transferred across to groups.io, so if old FASA fans want to find them again, that would be the place to go.

I was originally looking for an updated FASA map which had been compiled on Yahoo Groups, taking planets and systems mentioned in FASA scenarios and supplements, that were not listed with co-ordinates in FASA terms, but which had descriptions of directions or distances from systems listed with FASA co-ordinates. Through conversation on the Yahoo email, I found the map on the Morena sub-group on groups.io. So a new valuable FASA resource for fans old and new. :)
