XP update question

Quick question for everyone who is using Windows XP right now. Is anyone else getting at least one new update every single day? I have my automatic updates set to everyday at 3pm, and everytime I go to shut down the computer, I have at least one update needing to be installed. The only reason I ask is because in my system tray, with one or two exceptions in the past two weeks, I haven't been getting that yellow sheild indicating new updates. So, are the rest of you updating frequently or do I have something else going on inside my system?

If you just did a new 'clean' install of Windows; and you're doing it in the background, you might be getting a 'new' update everyday because you're not givin it time enough to download and install stuff while you have the PC powered and on-line. If this is an 'old' install;and you've been good with the updates; it could be a worm or virus doing something wierd.

If you're really concerned you can use the free (you just need to register) virus scan software AVAST; or do a scan via web browser with MicroTrends 'Housecall'. You also might want to download and do a Malware/Greyware scan with Spybot Search & Destroy.

Would Norton 360 do a decent enough job scanning and destroying, or do you think I would need one of these other special programs?

If you already have some virus scan software, use it, but just make sure you fully update it before you do a scan.

Look at the details of the actual update and see if its not something failing to install and trying the same thing every day. It probably is.

All right, I have a full scan going as we speak... where do I check the update details? Thanks for your help!

If you go to Start>All Programs>Windows Update or Microsoft Update, you'll go to the MS update scanner webpage - you can scan your computer and it'll tell you what updates you may need. You can also get more info on the whole updating process and settings, etc. HTH

archeryguy1701 I have automatic updates for XP as well ...

...and havent' seen the yellow shield in about 8-9 days. I'll give it another week if I don't see it I'll just go over to the 'update' site and check it out. I'm no expert but I don't think there's anything to worry about yet.
