XBOX360 - Overheating still a problem?

In light of recent price cuts for the XBOX 360 here in Europe I'm wondering what the situation is concerning the Red Ring od Death. Does the overheating problem still exist? Or has this been solved in new models?

I do remember something aboard a new, cooler system. But that was limited e.g. to the Halo Edition of the 360 at the time.

Elites & The New Premiums have the fixes now if I remember right which is a different internal design including a new heatsink. From what been told the failure rate is near or has reached the norm rate.

The problem appears to be corrected with the Falcon chipset released last Fall.
The Falcon is in all the Xbox 360 systems.

I've had mine since October '06 (non Falcon) and never had a problem with it.

I've had mine since December 2006 and no problem with RROD...Only thing 360 needs is a better Disc Reader

Interesting. The Elite is probably the one I'd be considering.

I just read that the new price cut was enabled by a new board titled Jasper and that a new board Valhalla will follow this sometime in the future (no earlier than next year, apparantly).

That article actually has a very thorough description of all the various hardware problems.

Mine just RRoD'd for the second time. I bought it in summer 2006, and I only had it repaired about 7 months ago.

Sorry to hear about that. The failure rate they've had is incredible, really.

The thing that's so frustrating (and the reason I'm even considering getting one) is that it's a great gaming machine, I think, and has a great games library. The price cuts make it even more attractive. But I certainly don't want to end up with the hardware problems.

I wouldn't let the failure rates stop me from buying one, in fact I was contemplating buying another one if mine was out of warranty, but thankfully it was still covered. I'm quite happy with the games, and the console in general.

I just upgraded to an Elite this past Thursday and I'm lovin' it.

I'm shocked how quick MS got the free HD transfer kit to me.
I filled out the Request form on Friday Morning and faxed it in and got the kit last night!

Had mine since December (it's non falcon ... it's the MB just before it) and have had no problems.

I use the stupid intercooler EX on it because I'm paranoid. It's loud as hell but it does seem to drive higher air flow through the machine, so it may be worth it (it would not be worth it if you got a Falcon, though).

I've had a falcon one for 6 months now and I've had no problems at all. I'm not kind to it either - one mammoth 12 hour Oblivion session right after blasting through the first 3 acts of Gears of War would surely have greased it if it was going to go tits up.

(It was a while back, and the wife and kid were away at the in-laws - honestly, I had nothing to do that weekend. No seriously. Why are you looking at me like that?)

I'd had long sessions on mine, too, then one day it just wouldn't switch on. Then today it went after only being on for 10 minutes or so.

Just did the Transfer of my old 20gb HD to my new 120gb and it was a peice of cake. Woot Woot.

That's a nice little transfer kit MS sends free.
I figured for free it would be some cheap piece of crap but it wasn't.
Nice hardware cable.
Easy to follow instructions.
Step By step CD.
15 min of my life.

EASY!

15 minutes of your life????? Damn you, Microsoft!! As if you haven't taken enough already!

If you're trying to be an educated consumer, you might wait until people can figure out which lots have the Japser boards. Ultimately, the GPU die shrink should solve the remaining problems.

I don't know why, but I was always under the impression you had a launch day unit. But since you didn't, that might explain why you never had a problem.

EDIT TO ADD: I'm saying that because of the peope I know with failures, we all had launch day (or near launch) units.

This is what I'm doing. I figure I'll probably grab a 360 just before Fallout 3... most of the Falcons should be phased-out by then and replaced with Jaspers, I should think.

Guess we'll need to know the serial numbers. Honestly, I'm not sure where to look for that information.
