xbox 360 failure rate is currently 54.2%

Guess who the latest victim of the RROD is...ME!!

My December 05 360 finally gave up the ghost after having zero problems previously. I turned it on and BLAM! RROD.

I know I logged EASILY thousands of hours on the thing as a game console and media center so I'm not terribly disappointed since my console probably lasted longer than most under heavy usage. But you can add me to the statistics now.

Welcome to the club.

Indeed. While the 54.2% defect rate might be a bit inflated due to non-random sampling, a rate of around 33% wouldn't surprise me one bit. Anecdotally, about half the 360 owners I know IRL have encountered the RROD...some hardcore gamers, some just using it as media extenders and nothing else.

I have a second 360 I've been using as a media center extender in the bedroom so that's being promoted to full-time use as soon as I get off my ass to hook it all up. When the RROD popped up, I was more concerned about how I was going to watch NFL games and the fall shows coming back more than anything else--the 360 is the only way I can watch TV on my couch since I cut out cable TV and turned my PC into a full-blown DVR.

I use my 360 as a Media Center Extender from my PC, which has an HDTV tuner and antenna hooked up to it. I just get the weekly FOX, CBS and NBC games that are broadcast over the air since I don't have cable.

Last year, my roommate had an X-Box have the RROD twice within a six month period. I love the software, and the gaming library is excellent, but personal experience has left me very weary of the console itself. These statistics, however they were gathered, do not exactly renew my confidence in the machine.
