X-Play and Attack of the Show

Thanks to my upgraded cable package I now get the "G4" channel for the first time. Apparently it used to be a video game channel but now it just shows Cops and Cheaters. The only relevant shows left, it seems, are "X-Play" which reviews video games and "Attack of the Show".

I've seen a couple episodes of X-Play and it's cool to see video reviews of games like that. I've only seen part of one Attack of the Show and I'm not quite sure what it's about. They seemed to be doing funny videos off the internet? Is it not about video games? What is the show about? Do you guys like or dislike it?

A long time ago there was a glorious channel called "Tech TV" and a channel called... I don't recall. I think it was Video Game Network or maybe it was G4.

On Tech TV there was a great, great show called "The Screen Savers" which dealt with technology, computers and stuff like that. They'd have segments on the latest gadgets, the newest computers, how to work on your computer and stuff like that and had two great hosts.

Also on Tech TV was "X-Play" hosted only by the male host (Adam). Well, eventualy the game-show oriented network bought-out/merged with Tech TV and then the changes happened. Tech TV became G4-Tech TV and eventualy just G4. The Screen Savers became less tech-oriented, got younger hosts and became increasingly frivilous, got its name changed to "Attack of the Show" and now, yeah, it's pretty much about the internet and other light stuff.

The comely Morgan Webb, one of The Screen Savers' corespondants, was put on X-Play to "sex up" the show and X-Play probably came out better for it but it too, after a few years, went through a bit of a format change.

G4 used to have other video-game related shows on (like Cheaters, which had another sexy host, but I don't believe that one is on anymore probably due to video-game cheats, tips and secrets being readily available on the internet.)

Since then G4 mostly became another channel to air second-run syndicated programing and to air various Japanese import gameshows. Attack of the show is interesting and humorous enough -haven't watched it in a while- and X-Play was always fairly interesting, though its one I sorta stopped watching when it went through the format change to an hour-long show about gaming in general rahter than just game reviews.

Possibly one of my most favorite X-Play reviews:

What's funny on X-Play is when they interview video game makers and you hear all this great stuff about what they're going to do with their game, and then a few months later when it comes out X-Play trashes it in their review because it's just so awful (i.e. Bionic Commano, Darkest of Days).

The only saving grace of AOTS... OLIVIA MUNN.

If for no other reason, watch it for Olivia Munn.

One show I miss is fresh gear. Which was basically just tech reviews and segments about new technology. Some of the reviews were pretty hilarious.

The thing that bugs me about Xplay is they don't seem to like anything remotely Japanese.
Yeah I seem to remember them hating on persona 3 pretty strongly, which was weird considering it was such a well recieved game; both by other critics and myself lol

So I've seen a couple full episodes of AOTC now. It's amusing but do they rehearse/write the show at all? Because it's full of awkward pauses and flubbed lines and bizarre riffs.

Mainly that's just their duty as journalists, right? I think they need to give a fair chance to any games that come out, so they are gonna give em coverage either way. It is funny when they do that and end up crushing the game during reviews though

So what was X-Play like before they added Morgan Webb and the station changed up formats?

Basically just Adam give the reviews. It was pretty straight-forward and perhaps a bit more "serious" on how it gave the reviews and a bit less of the sketches and nonsense.

Adding Morgan Webb wasn't really what effected the show, she brought a lot to it and it was still funny and decent enough reviews. X-Play's real problem came when that show changed formats.
