All other things being equal, how would the X-32 fare up against an F-35 in air-to-air combat?

That's one way the gov't could decide which one gets the contract......Have them fight it out! The last one flying wins.
Assuming both were operational armed aircraft there would be very little between them. It would depend on the skills of the pilot and conditions of the engagement.
The F-35 was marginally ahead in most trials and therefore won the contest, but it was very close, there would be no advantages clear enough to give a decisive advantage in an (unlikely) one-on-one close range engagement.
