written your own Star Trek novel?

I've been writting fanfic for a while, though was never able to get anything finished. It was only after reading some of the excellent fanfic writers here that I finally sat down, developed, started and finished a story for an original crew and ship. "Underworld" wound up being just under 93,000 words (before editing), which would place it within the realm of novel length.

Ultimately I would love to get into writing, whether it was Trek or something else.

I think this thread just ran afoul of the trek lit forum rules. I wouldn't expect any of the published authors to post in here from now on.
Well, the trek lit forum has it's own separate section of the BBS, as do the published authors. You have to admit this is interesting.

How long does a story have to be (number of words) to be considered a "novel?"

:)

From 65,000 to 90 for paper back. More for hard cover which seems to be preferred, so basically an astronomical amount which would all probably be necessary for a beginner to submit to Pocket books at Simon and Schuster even though they say you only need an eight to twelve page synopsis and three accompanying sample chapters with follow up.

Oh yeah, interesting topic, just one the published authors won't take part in since people started posting story ideas in it.

Hard and paper are just formats and are irrelevant to a book being a novel. 40, 000 and over is thought of as novel length according to Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Other sources say differently. So its kind of up to the author and publisher.

I tried writing a Star Trek story once but never got anywhere with it. My idea was to rewrite bits of the classic movie era to include certain aspects which I at the time felt were missing.

On February 1st of this year, I sat down and began to write a Star Trek story. It is the first one of the Trek universe that I have ever attempted, even though I have long been a fan of the shows and the movies.

It clicked. Somehow, the stars aligned and it came together. Yes, it is just fan fiction and no, it will never be published. But right now, it is approaching the of the outline I made for it and is currently at 77,406 words. In less than two months time.

It is posted here on the Fan Fiction forum, if anyone would care to give it a read and let me know that they think. Criticism and advice are always appreciated; we only learn by making mistakings and then correcting them, after all. The story is Star Trek: Republic (it is a working title only; yes, I have problems with naming my stuff) and you are more than welcome to post any comments you see fit.

And he ran away that great idea in his hot little hands. 'It's mine, Mine!, all mine. the treasure of Ali Baba. I'm rich, rich beyond compare. I feel like a little girl.' To which Bugs says 'What a maroon.'

I wrote a really crappy novel about the TOS crew in an alternate universe, it was so silly, I even blew up Vulcan lol. I ended up just throwing it in the trash, the idea was just too stupid.

Oh, so YOU wrote Star Trek XI??

Sorry, couldn't resist.:bolian:

As to the question, Yes I did. I spent six months writing one and it just didn't work, then, I tossed all the Star Trek elements out, created my own characters, and the story came together with no problem.

Now if I could just find an agent......

I'm writing a fan fic, based on the trip the Hansens made as they went to study the Borg. Parts of it have been posted on here, but I'd like to try to get it published when I'm done.
