Writers Favourite Races

(i'm a assuming fan-fic writers count)

1)Andorians and Klingons.

2)I'd love to write a Caitians book and take them beyond being a bunch of cat-joke aliens. (PAD, I'm looking at you...)

Romulans, personally. There's something almost Shakespearean or Roman about them that feels different than writing for other species. But, lately, I've taken a shine to the Bajorans. Again, it's like writing for humans in a different point of history; similar to yet different from the perspective of the reader and the writer.

I've written smut and been paid for it. Does that count?

It's my understanding that "exploring" or "delving into" the Deltans is actually fatal for non-Deltans. Or am I misremembering...?

Not fatal, but psychically and emotionally overwhelming to a dangerous degree. It's a mental as well as physical union, and the risk is that one can become so immersed in the joining that one can't stand to be without it, or that one loses one's own sense of identity. So the risks are more along the lines of addiction or insanity. Basically the same as the dangers of a mindmeld, except the physical component of the melding is, err, rather more involved.

That would make an interesting theme for a story. Ilia's Oath of Celebacy and the line " I would never take advantage of a sexually immature species" makes a lot more sense now.

I only knew about the pheromones and the sexual openness of Deltan society.

Unfortunately, the TMP script plays this aspect for laughs and thankfully the horny Sulu falling all over himself scene is only in the extended television cut of the film.

Alas, not much you can do with adult themes in G or PG Rated motion pictures or broadcast television.

Kzintis > Kzinti.

Just so you know.

(Waits to see if anyone will post a 'Lyrans > either' line...)

It appears that they will be called Ky'theri when "Killkenny Cats" is made as part of the fan fiction series Star Trek: Phase II.

Kzinti, Lyrans, Ky'theri, Tzenkethi... oh my ;)

...and Carnivons, too. (They are a canine species which shared a common ancestor to the Kzintis and Lyrans - and yes, they did, indeed, fight like cats and dogs!)

Although, there are a few significant differences between the Kzintis in the SFU's Hegemony to other incarnations - cat ears, no tails, sentient females, an s in the plural term, and a quite distinct political structure - and of course the Lyrans are SFU-native, as are the Carnivons.

I would really love to see a deal done which brought the 'Feline Empires' to life on screen, though!

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm a fan of many of the species indigenous to the SFU - such as the five founding species of the Inter-Stellar Concordium, the likes of the Baduvai and Eneen in the Cloud, and the member species of the Maesron Alliance in the Omega Octant.

LOVE the Caitians and I agree. Add them to my list. I had a ball with them in SoD.

I don't know if a fanfic writer is permitted to answer this question...but my favorite species to write for would be the Cardassians, with the Bajorans as a wonderful runner-up. As I've mentioned in a thread elsewhere in the forum--oddly enough, if you let each temper the other, you get an idea of what I'm like as a person and in beliefs: faith and steel, I'd say.

This is a question for the writers really.
1) What are your favourite races?

Bajorans, Tholians, Caitians...

2) What race would you like to try to write for next and expand on?

The great thing about doing a Titan novel is that you can bring in obscure alien species from all over as walk-ons...
But I'd like to see more about the Caitians, the Gorn or the Tzenkethi...

I never pictured you as an erotica writer, Christopher.

Well, you've never understood me at all.

Oh, I understand better than you might think. ;)

That fanfic you wrote when you were 13 doesn't count, y'know.

To drag this careening back on topic, the Bajorans always intrigued me as a spiritual race, but not carrying any of the baggage of human spirituality. The way cultures see deity has always been an interest of mine. :techman:

About the Bajorans not having the spiritual baggage of humanity...sure, their religion is not the same as any of ours, but I think we see examples that can be compared to the best and the worst of humanity's faith, and everything in between. That's actually one of the things I like about it--instead of being used to canonize or demonize, the Bajorans were used to show ALL aspects of faith. :)

Kzintis > Kzinti.

Just so you know.
I have no idea what it is I'm supposed to know, or care about.

It wasn't intended to be more than a (failed) attempt at light-heartedness on my part...

(But I guess that reaction is indicative of the problem that the Kzintis have in terms of awareness among the wider Trek fandom, compared to the Kzinti.)

What on earth are you talking about? Are you talking about a Star Trek role Playing game?

Like Christopher, I prefer my own races since I enjoy worldbuilding in my fanfic.

Of the canon races, I like writing about the Trill. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned them yet.

I don't have a favorite, but I'd like to see more fic writers using more balenced crews. Not ALL Human or ALL Vulcan, etc.

YES. This has been something that bothered me--that the mix on the Titan was so unusual. In Diane Duane's TOS, for instance, that was par for the course.
