Wow...X-Files: I Want To Believe

Ultimale

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Really? This is what they came up with? They have two of the greatest characters in sci-fi, a great premise, a wonderful (well, mostly) history to draw from, and they produce...this film. A movie that manages to insult Catholics, Catholic priests, homosexuals, and transgenders? Not to mention people who enjoy good sci-fi? Why not just go and make a full-on monster of the week type story? But with some scale to it? Maybe with werewolves, or maybe go the Hellboy route and do some more investigating of urban legends? The Mothman would've been interesting. I just felt highly disappointed and though I saw Mulder and Scully, I kept wondering where my old friends really were.

It's interesting the movie has the flimsiest of "X-File" to it. THIS is what they bring Mulder and Scully out of hiding for?

Dull movie, depressing and bleak. I mean it takes place presumably somewhere in Virginia but it seems more like the North Pole.

Bleak, bleak, bleak. And the story is just weak.

Yeah, I expected a LOT better.

I rather liked the movie and I didn't think it was offensive if anything it affirmed real faith. And while it might've been alittle bleak The X-Files wasn't a sunny, bright series to begin with.

It certainly had its moments and wasn't nearly as bleak as this movie was. It was friggin' July and I think I got SAD from it.

I wasn't offended by the movie, I was just bored to tears by it. Nor do I have a huge problem with them doing a more standard mystery then an "X-Files" as the episode Paper Hearts is one of my favorite from the series. But very little touched me about this film. What I did like was the little looks into the current lives of Mulder and Scully. That did work for me, as it was also rather muted and underplayed (which is how they did play the relationship on the show itself). But to me it felt like (and even more so) one of the problems with the TNG film Insurrection. It felt like a average two part episode that had a marginal increase in production design. In fact most of the X-Files two parters from seasons 2-5 were superior in both style, scope, dialogue and performances.

And with it being an under performer (to say the least) in its World Wide Box office and it is also performing fairly poorly in DVD sales, we will be hard pressed to even get a continuation in any televised form (its been brought up that they are open to doing made for tv specials).

But again while I was disappointed, I still enjoyed a few aspects of it. And compare that to the series finale, which made me want to burn my DVD's, this gave a more satisfying ending to the show.

I think that's compliments the TV show and not really knocks the movies in question, there are a number of Tv shows who's production values are as good as if not better than a number of movies out there.

I loved the what the characters were going through in this movie, but the plot definitely could have been more exciting.

I agree, and that sums it up entirely. What an entirely lame and lightweight story. Where's the supernature? Where's the monsters of the week? WTF is going on here?

90% of the standalones were superior to this film.

I think the point of the movie was a character study of where Mulder and Scully are in their lives at this point. The mystery was just the McGuffin to get them back together again so we could visit with them. I really enjoyed it.

X-Files used to be my favorite show but this movie was astonishingly awful. There wasn't even a monster! And the whole thing about decapitating someone and keeping their head alive in goo... it was just silly. It's just ridiculous they had six or so years and this was all they could come up with. But worst of all... Scully with long blonde hair?! :p

I didn't find it offensive to Catholics.

I did find it boring, stupid, and awful. I couldn't believe that after all this time, that is what they came up with. It wasn't even an X-File!

There were some nice character moments between Mulder and Scully, but this movie couldn't have been saved even if Scully oiled-up and danced naked with a stripper pole.

I don't see how it was offense to people of faith. That's just silly.

I understand a lot of the problems people have with the film but I have to say that I enjoyed it quite a bit.

It wasn't a bad movie. However, it wasn't overly good, either.

The movie lacked any ambition that would be expected from a movie based on a TV series.

Ultimately I think the film misfired and was just okay at best, but I agree with you. The film simply wanted to get them together and show their current lives and how time has changed their approach to X-Files type of work or "the darkness" as Scully called it. Mulder still needs it, is drawn to it and is completely empty without it. Scully can no longer face it. The actual crime/mystery at the center of the movie wasn't as important from the point of view this film was made.

Even so, I wish they would have made the crime/mystery more compelling and interesting.

I just wish the movie wasn't so depressing, muted, and bleak.

If it had taken place in the Spring, the music wasn't so non-exsistant and the cast had a bit more "pep" in their step the movie would've been -somewhat- better.

But as I said, this movie was just bleak, down and depressing.
