Wow, the deleted NEM scene with Picard and Data

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
ok
I'm watching the collectors edition of NEM and I finally am looking at the deleted scenes. I hadnt before because I thought they were just going to inclue the ones on the original DVD release.

I really like the scene after the wedding with Picard and Data (the toast) it eally works. They should have kept it.

thoughts?

After the wedding, Picard and Data indulge in Picard Chateu wine, and Picard explains to data the truth that occasions such as this are filled with both joy AND sadness, and how it's difficult to move on, and how it reminds him of his own choices and his own mortality. Good stuff.

Yeah, it wouldn't have saved Nemesis or anything, but it would have added a dash of meaning to Data's eventual fate and why he chose it.

I think a lot of the deleted scenes would have made that movie so much better. The one where Data says that B-4 isn't him, or the one that shows the crew morning Data more. Especially the ones with Geordi since that relationship was so vital to the show.

There's quite a bit they should've kept in. I think there was even something with Picard talking with Worf and relating Federation/Klingon relations with the building Federation/Romulan ones to convince him to go along with things.

But, hey, Baird knew what he was doing. Right?

I have a question: Are the two DVD releases of NEM containing different deleted scenes?

Yes, Yes Yes......

The first had 6 (or 7) deleted scenes
and the 2 disc set had an additional 7 (or 6) and the original ones as well.

Someone did a poll way back when the 2 disc first came out and asked which scens should have been left in............

The Picard / Data scene was the top vote getter I'm sure.

By the way, the 13 total deleted scenes totaling about 20 minutes are ALL the cut scenes from Nemesis. The other 20+ minutes from Berman's magical '2 hr & 45' cut are dialogue cut from existing scenes that were left in.
Since NO MOVIE ever uses every word filmed it's nonsense to say there was a 2hr 45 min cut.
It simply ran 2 hrs & 45 minutes when they first cut it together.
It's not like they showed the studio a 2 hr 45 min cut and were told to cut the movie down.
that was simply berman's excuse as to why they left out several very nice scenes.
Plus a decent chunk of the extra 20+ was the extended 'buggy chase' which should have been cut entirely. they simply should have ended the scene when they find the duplicate head and saved 5 minutes of the bullsh*t chase.
Then they could have left in the Picard / Data scene and perhaps one more.

But no, they thought the audience would prefer seeing Picard & co. blast some primitives for the terrible offense of having spotted some aliens, who had no right letting themselves be seen in the first place---you know that stupid 'prime directive' thing

^^
??? Both Nem cuts??

No there is only one cut.

There are simply more deleted scenes on the 2 disc version than on the first.
The 2-disc contains ALL OF THEM. So you only need to purchase one. Unless of course, you already have the first then you will have to buy (or rent) the 2 disc.
It was very logical for them to offer the 2 disc version with MORE deleted scenes since it had been so recent since the first release.

For that same reason, I wouldn't be surprised if the (assumed) 2009 Blu ray release of the Trek movies DIDN'T include previously unseen deleted footage from TWOK, TSFS & TUC (which do exist and were shot.)

I’m actually hoping that some day there will be new versions of the Trek films.

I’m generally not big on that sort of thing (unless it’s a badly needed Director’s cut ala “Kingdom of Heaven”), but almost all the Trek films could benefit from re-cuts—especially TFF, NEM, and GEN.

In this case it’s as if they took ALL of content out of the film. It wasn’t very good to begin with, but they managed to rape it of what little substance it had.

Well, with the storage capacity of the Blu ray format they easily fit multiple versions of film onto a single disc.

All 3 version of TMP--with 1080p upgrades for the D.C. FX
Both versions of TWOK & even a third with the 'Romulan' footage etc.
Two versions of TSFS incorporating a lot of cut scenes.
3 versions of TFF--original, original with new FX & rec-cut with new FX
All 3 versions of TUC and perhaps a fourth with a lot of the cut footage.
GEN with some new footage
Insurection with a re-cut by Frakes
& finally the original & a longer version of Nemesis

I trust no one would object to new cuts as long as their preferred version was included 7 preserved............

Oh wait these are Star Trek fans, they want all versions except their favorite destroyed.

That would be just awesome and I'd definately double dip on them if they did this.

^^ Yeah all jokes aside....I think multiple version 'branching versions' would apeal to almost all fans.
The delay in 'Trek 11' till May of '09----with a Blu ray release in later '09 improves this possibility as they have already started the 'clean-ups' of the movies in preparation for Blu ray release as well as extras. So with well over a year till the release they may decide to do the right thing and put multiple versions on the discs as well.
A label on a Blu ray of TWOK proclaiming Includes both previous versions as well as a new longer edition with never before seen footage!!
would sure have me snapping one up--even I had to steal it!!
Just kidding---mostly.

Data/Picard scene was nice but it was the right decision to cut it. Even the final cut of the movie has pacing problems with too many talky scenes back to back, adding this and some of the other cut scenes would have made it worse. It's OK to add scenes like this back for special editions (like they did for LOTR movies), but for the theatrical version it was the right decision to cut the scene.

^^That very well may be true, but it is now 6 years later and we're mostly talking about DVD versions so in the present context, the movie would probably be helped.
For example the 'Scotty's nephew' thing & other additions wouldn't have made any difference in the earnings of TWOK in the theater but it makes the home video version more enjoyable to most folks because it accentuates the characters backstories and adds more continuity ( "...he wants revenge for me passing sentence on him 15 years ago.." ) So bring on all that extra footage and with the click of a button let the viewer decide.
