In the original script for ST XI and the deleted scenes that were filmed, Kirk sends Gaila a message that she thinks will be him telling her that he has similar feelings of love for her, but is actually an "I'm sorry" note that downloads a virus into the Kobyashi Maru simulation, allowing him to beat the test. I imagine she would have been crushed by that note, since she had told Kirk she loved him the night before, and he had apparently played along...
Now, assuming that Uhura and Gaila were friends (which they might not have been), once it was discovered what Kirk had done to the Orion girl, how he had used her feelings to get access to the simulator program, wouldn't Uhura be pretty sore at him for that? Yet seems seems very proud and all smiles when he walks out on the bridge as Captain at the end of the movie - everything is suddenly hunky-dorey!
I can see why they deleted that scene ... it makes Kirk look like an uber-jerk ... great way to alienate the character to your audience!
