He was missing his right middle finger??

It really does come down to this, doesn't it?

Or is it the fact that he is being used as "comic relief" that bothers you?

I like Simon Pegg. I think he's just right for Scotty. Doohan had a great deal of comic moments in TOS and Pegg could easily do him justice, just you wait!

James Doohan lost his finger during the war. Montgomery Scott never lost any fingers.

I've always maintained that Scott having 10 fingers while Doohan had only 9 was the best special effect in all of Star Trek. :)

A bunch of fans could hold him down at a convention and fix the continuity error with his finger......

Now I am glad that Paul McGillion "Carson Beckett" wasn't chosen as Scotty.

Has somebody seen an awful lot more footage than I have? I've only heard him utter a few words and I have no idea how believable he is in the film :vulcan:

I've been wondering the same thing.

The only line I've heard him say is, "I like this ship. This is exciting!" or something like that.

Sounded fine to me.

James Doohan only had nine fingers?

I had no idea. They couldn't put bumps on the Klingon's heads, but they could give Scotty an extra finger? Wow....

Anyway, I think the criticism of Pegg's Scotty being comic relief is premature and silly. First of all, we only have one line and two seconds or so of screen time to judge by. Second, it's not like James "I know this ship like the back of my hand *clunk* Doohan wasn't used in the same way. Third, just because Pegg is a comic actor doesn't mean that he's doing that exclusively here. It's like calling TOS a Sci-Fi western because a lot of the main actors played in western. And fourth, what I saw in the trailer was a young engineer enjoying his time aboard what would become the great love of his life -the Enterprise. But that's my take, based on one line and two seconds or so of screen time.

Just joking about the finger.

But if they digitally removed Pegg's finger, then just hid the fact that his finger was digitally removed, would that be a canonical homage worthy enough to earn Pegg some credit amongst his doubters?
