I'd probably go, Earth has become such a shithole that i'd never want my descendants to live on it. They'd possibly have a better life on another world and if that means me living the rest of my life on a ship to get them there i'd do it, i'd be able to teach my descendants values which here on Earth wouldn't last 5 minutes.

I'm assuming an Earth like world is the destination BTW.

That's the correct assumption. Beautiful planet with a lot of unique lifestock, Earth-like seasons/rotation etc.

I can't think of a single good reason to guarantee my death happens on a starship.

I think of it like this:

As a writer, I could log the entire experience of leaving Earth for an entirely new generation of humans starting a new society. You'd hardly be forgotten! And if you were to raise a family on board and pursue a career, it could be rewarding.

Of course, you do run the risk that the ship never makes it...

Assuming we had at least a moderate chance of success, I'd go. Though I don't know what function I could possibly serve. I'm guessing they wouldn't need wedding planners!

Will the ship be overloaded with telephone sanitizers and hair dressers?

I think it would be a great opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself.

I'd go. Like a shot, I'd go. I sincerely doubt they'd have a place for someone with expertise in the spiritual and pastoral care of people with mental health problems - though I could imagine there'd be a fair few cases of cabin fever, and someone to teach mindfulness, meditation and the like might come in handy.

I would imagine the breeding programme would need to be very carefully regulated to prevent overpopulating the ship, so all births would be by AI. Mind, one could have a lot of fun keeping in practice for the new planet. ;)

Some small part of me is sad I shan't live to see this happen. A generation or two and they'll have so many possibilities! (If humans don't get washed away in global warning, of course)

I'd go for the adventure of it all. Plus I'd presumably have a mate on board... that's always a plus, assuming she's not a prude.

No, I wouldn't.

As much as would like to see other worlds and go into space I know in my heart that I would get so homesick that it would be unbearable.

I even get homesick for Tassie when I go to Adelaide for a couple of weeks to visit my sister.

If they have a position for a history professor and archivist then sure I'd go.

I've got nothing going for me here except working on my degree.

Are you kidding? I think someone with your skills would be absolutely vital on a generational ship! Even without a specific Christian faith requirement, spiritual care would be very important for the mental health of everyone on board.

Mark me down under "sign me up!" - although it'd have to be with my husband and kids, but I shouldn't think that'd be a problem since if it's a generational ship it'd be handy to have some of the next generation already around (my eldest is only 3) and my husband has a lot more useful skills than I do!

no. if i'm going to explore strange new worlds, i'm only going to the Moon or Mars unless they invent FTL travel. or stasis.

generational ship? no way.

It depends on what the conditions would be like on board, and eventually for my descendants on the planet. I'd lean towards signing up, even though I know I'd go through at least a few bouts of home sickness. I'd be on a frakking space ship! How awesome is that?

A lot of people would think that's reason enough.

Lots of lonely women!!!
Winner.

Very possibly. It would depend on who else was going and what kind of society was intended at the destination; and if I could bring all my books and stuff. :D I'd miss the Earth and nature, but it would be worth it to help create a brand new Human civilization from scratch; it's probably the only circumstance where I would consider having children.

Also, it would be cool to leave my thoughts behind as a "Founding Father" who would be cited endlessly by future generations.

If we were heading to a planet that would be filled with like-minded beings who didn't want religion to come with, then yes I'd probably consider it.
