Would you give your child a trekkie name?

You_Guyz

Commander
I was thinking about this when reading another thread on here.
The trek names (distinctly trek names) I would seriously consider giving my children are

~Girls~
Jadzia
Kes
Seven (also in a nod to some other tv shows...)
Deanna

~Boys~
....
None I can think of

I (we) did. Our youngest daughter is Natasha (Tasha) Troi Bailey. I (we) wouldn't change a thing. Although she did gripe about it a bit when she was younger, she is happy with her name. Those names were chosen because we wanted her to be fiesty, unafraid, and to have the fortitude to take on challenges, but with the wisdom and compassion to be able to think things through first. She is particularly happy with my little ST display. In amongst other things, her photo is prominently displayed along with little action figures of Tasha Yar and Deanna Troi. She is a joy.

Only if it sounded like a regular name and wouldn't be likely to get the kid laughed at and teased. I don't like when parents inflict such names on poor kids.

If I have a daughter one day, I might name her Kira, because 1) it is the last name of one of my favorite Trek characters, but 2) it also sounds like a normal first name for a girl, and it is in a number of countries; it would be a little uncommon my own (if I still live in it by that time), but would still sound like a normal name of foreign origin.

I guess there's also nothing wrong with names like Deanna, Jadzia, or Tasha (although I wouldn't choose Deanna or (Na)Tasha because I don't care much for Troi and Yar; but both of the names are quite common and not immediately reminiscent just of those characters).

But I don't think I'd name a child Spock, since that would provoke a lot of weird looks and jokes (do you have pointy ears, etc.). "Seven" would be even worse, if would sound like you're giving your children numbers instead of names, and she (or he) would probably get asked all the time "So... do you actually have 6 siblings?" :cardie: :borg:

A friend from high school named his daughter "Miri".

I never thought of giving my boys "trek" names. I am a jazz musician/composer, and I wanted to name my first-born son "Kenton" (after bandleader Stan Kenton). My wife wouldn't hear of it. I thought it was a nice name.

My youngest son is Benjamin. Don't tell the wife where I got the name!

If I had a child one day I would consider giving him/her a Trek-related name. It would be a name that wouldn't get too much attention.

The wife snuffed Tiberius, but since James is my grandfather's name on my Mom's side and my great grandfather's name on my Dad's side I got away with having James as my son's middle name. The family links were the primary reasons but the Trek thing did cross my mind.

I don't see a problem with a nice name like James, Tasha or Deanna, but something like Spock or Seven would be tantamount to child cruelty.

It also depends on whether you're from I suppose. Don't know of many Oriental or African children named James or Deanna.

Yeah, I'd name a child after a Trek character. Depends on the name, though. There are quite a few cult-tv names I like, Connor (from Highlander) being a favourite.

I agree, too me that is way overboard. Pets on the other hand I'd name after Trek characters.
