Would you be interested in seeing a JJ Trek movie... in real-time?!

Would you be interested in seeing a "real-time" Trek movie?

Re: Would you be interested in seeing a JJ Trek movie... in real-time?

No offence to the OP, but I love these ever so slightly loaded questions. The "Would you like to eat pumpkin if it tasted like ice cream?" sort of thing. I mean most people are going to be interested in a "mind-bogglingly fantastic" script of any sort, yet despite that massive distortion, the real-time theme still only has currently about 58% of the vote. So given that the script is not likely to be mind-bogglingly fantastic, about 37% will drop back into the last catergory. Which is closer to what I would have expected, based solely on "real-time" popularity with respect to Star Trek. Anyway, I prefer my Star Trek movies to have both! :)

I think 24 was popular because the quality was good enough, not because anyone was in love with the "real time" gimmick. That is of course a guess. I've never asked a fan. But I think it probably would have done just as well if it had be called 66 or 94. ;)

So sorry, apart form maybe being a little more "immediate", I don't think you gain anything.

Ain't that a bit like saying "apart from greater visual variety, color doesn't gain you anything over black and white"? :p

Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that real-time fiction is as valuable an artistic tool as color. But the immediacy of the form can pump up an emotional charge, even in a legitimate drama as opposed to 24's pulp theatrics. High Noon, for instance, wouldn't be anywhere as memorable or intense if the sheriff had eight hours to try to recruit partners, and we saw radical shifts in daylight during that time.

Hi Gaith,

I guess my post was rather heavy handed.

Yes, it’s probably exactly like that! :) However colour tends to be mostly positive in my view, where as "real time" only works where it fits the script I think (which you seem to imply in the first option of your poll). And even there it may be limiting. There could be better ways of adding immediacy. A slow/fast mix for example.

I think it is better to come up with a good script and find the best way of portraying it rather than trying to shoehorn the movie in to a particular tight convention.

Sure, that may have been the natural way to tell High Noon. It may work for ST, but I doubt it's a natural fit for most ST stories. It just doesn't seem like there will be much actual "star trekking".:) You might be able to sell it to the Stargate guys though. ;)

I would much rather see a cop show like "Law & Order" or a crime investigation show like "CSI", except set in the Star Trek universe using Trek Universe technology to investigate crimes, and Federation, Klingon, or Cardassian legal and investigation people/cops/etc.

Not a joke.

"Frank, as far as this Klingon is concerned... (puts on sunglasses) ...today wasn't a good day to die."

YYYEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!

Re: Would you be interested in seeing a JJ Trek movie... in real-time?

Considering it's just minutes to Vulcan which is 16 ly away according to Enterprise, Alpha Centauri would be so close you couldn't even enjoy a muffin and coffee before you were there.

Accoring to Scotty in TMP Vulcan was four days away from Earth. Obviously the NuEnterprise is much, much faster that Enterprise Prime.

I don't get why so many people can't figure out that time actually passed between the Enterprise jumping to warp and Chekov making his announcement. Bones had time to change and Kirk was sedated for some amount of time before waking up (unless he was sedated for 20 seconds, which would be stupid).

I think there is an assumption that it only takes a few minutes to drill to a planets core to drop the Red Matter. It's one that I would agree with based on how powerful the drill seems.

The timing in this part of the film is an absolute mess. Even though people change clothes there is nothing that indicates any type of passage of time.

There is, but you don't want to accept it.

Which is?

You know it's okay to like something and still see the flaws within it?
