Would the Star Trek Complete Comic Collection CD work in the UK?

I imported mine from the US, and it works perfectly:techman:

You just need a PC with a DVD drive. PC software is universal.

Actually, it should work on any computer with PDF-viewing software. Which means it'll work under Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. There is no DRM at all on the DVD or the files.

If you use any software other than Adobe Reader, there'll be a watermark visible; how annoying it is depends on the individual. You'll also get this watermark if you print out any of the issues.

That explains it!

My wife gave me that collection for Christmas and I love it but I'd noticed the little Copyright 2008 a the bottom of almost every single page, I'm assuming that's what you're referring to, and wondered why they'd do that.

It's good to know I can view these without seeing that if I wanted to install the huge, bloated Acrobat Reader.

Actually, the copyright notice is still on every page. What I was referring to was a watermark--it appears as a slightly darkened, medium thickness outline of the Star Fleet insignia, centrally located on every page.

Oh, OK. I wish I could get rid of that.

If that's the case, you don't have to use just the Adobe Acrobat Reader then. I use the Foxit Reader; much smaller footprint and uses a WHOLE LOT less resources. I can confirm that it doesn't have a watermark on the pages. I've never seen what you're describing.

Just in case someone wants to use something else without having to install the Adobe reader.

It's an attempt to stop people printing out the pages, collating them together and selling them on eBay for profit.

The disk is sold for "USA only" because the company was unable to secure the rights for international distribution. Amazon USA happily sent mine to a US penpal as "a gift", who then sent it on to me in Australia. Trying to cover my bases, in case it was going to sell out its limited run, I'd also ordered a copy from a local comic store but they said they didn't think Diamond would be able sell it to them, but the store ended up using a different shipping method to secure a few copies for their customers' standing orders. None for the open shelves. So I ended up with two. They work fine.

I just downloaded and installed Foxit for Linux (not available in the Ubuntu repositories; had to download it from the Foxit website (apparently it is available in the Fedora repositories)), and tried it. I still could see the watermark. Also, I couldn't get the hyperlinks to work (I only did a little Googling so far).

I could suggest doing something like converting the PDF files to CBR files. I wouldn't suggest using google to find out how to do that though. :)

This is REALLY strange. I went back and looked at mine again, thinking maybe this watermark isn't as noticeable as I would've thought. Maybe it was there and I was just missing it.

Is it very small? Is it only on certain pages? Where is it located on the pages?

I have version 3.1.4.1125 of the Foxit Reader for Windows and I just got through looking through every single page of DC's the Mirrior Universe Saga TPB, and I didn't see a single watermark anywhere on any page. All the hyperlinks I could see worked fine too. I'm assuming you're referring to the ones on the series pages that show the covers for every issue and you can open the issues from there?

I'm not sure why you guys are having these troubles and I'm not but the only thing I'm seeing is the Copyright 2008 notice at the bottom of every page. Strange, very strange.

The watermark should look something like this:

http://trekmovie.com/images/comics/git_wwho_kirk.jpg

Note that in the middle of the page there's a light grey outline of the Starfleet arrowhead insignia overlapping the image of Kirk. That's how it looks when printed; it might appear a little different onscreen.

Watermarks are usually large and faint and positioned in the center of an image -- subtle enough not to interfere with the clarity of the text/image but noticeable enough and covering a large enough span of the image that they clearly mark its source. They can't just be some little thing in the corner, because that could be easily cropped out by a plagiarist.

Thanks Christopher. At least now I know what everyone is talking about.

I pulled up that exact page just so I could make certain I was looking at the same thing you were showing me. I believe that was page 35 from the March 1987 edition of Who's Who in Star Trek and I can confirm that, with my copy of Foxit Reader, I don't see said watermark in any form on the screen.

For what it's worth, I tried printing this same page and didn't see the watermark there either.

I don't know why mine is acting so differently but I can't say that I'm upset about it.

Thanks again for making clear what everyone was talking about.

Yes, those hyperlinks and the ones that lead up to them.

It's all probably just a difference between the Linux and the Windows versions of the software.
