Would Shebly have worked as Captain?

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Janeway hater, but does anyone think Voyager would be a more/less interesting show with a Captain Shelby from 'Best of Both Worlds' rather than Janeway?

Rewatching BOBW recently I was disappointed she was never used again since she had a fitting 'Star Trek' presence. She was a strong female character and really hot as well.

Has anyone ever heard of any plans to bring her character back at any point? Whatever happened to that actress anyway?

Elizabeth Dennehy didn't fit the type of woman they were looking for. I think they wanted more of a mommy type woman, Bujold, Mulgrew.

It would have been a much more interesting show, and I doubt Jeri Ryan would ever have been brought in.

The caretaker needed to be kicked in the nads not mothered.

Same too with the first encounter with the Kazon which Janeway ran away from instead of making a case for her dominance by being hard ass.

I'd never thought about that before, but now that I think about it Dennehy would've made an excellent captain, IMO. The Shelby character was certainly interesting, and very well acted.

At the same time, they needed a softer side to the captain. Indeed, in one episode they have her talk about being "more than a captain" to the crew. Besides, Janeway developed the butt-kicking style quite quickly - see The Chute, for instance.

I never saw Shelby as anything above a First Officer. Fill-in captain where needed. She always seemed like much more a specialist or consultant than someone on the command path.

I'm sure Riker would have loved to see her stranded in the Delta Quadrant for 7 years. ;)

I wonder how she would have spent her holodeck time.

I think she and Cavit would've gotten along just fine--and that would've been the problem. She would never have bent from her SF ideals and make Chak her XO.

Definetly think she would rther have seen her than Mulgrew's Janeway. The role could have been tailored for a younger, more heroic, less matronly captain. It also would have meant less gesturing, body contortions, and mugging. from Voyager's captain.

Well, since there are no new TV shows on the horizon just now, and the upcoming movie will be in the wrong era for Shelby, I'll assume you're asking in a more general sense than just "will I see Elizabeth Dennehy as Shelby again?"

Commander (later Captain) Shelby has been a central character of Star Trek: New Frontier for quite a long time now. Additionally, in a distinct but marginally related continuity, Shelby (as portrayed by Risha Denney---not related so far as I know) has been a central character of Star Trek: Hidden Frontier since its third or fourth episode.

Except that, y'know, Cavit was kinda busy being dead. :p

Yup LindleToe, this is who i think of when the name Shelby pops up. :)

Uh no....Janeway was the best captain for Voyager. Her style of command fit the circumstances of her crew perfectly, and I doubt any other captain in SF would have done half as well in her chair.

Hey, I thought Captain Chakotay did a fine job in Before and After. Meanwhile Poor Capitan Tuvok didn't last a month before his crew mutinied. Kim should have been keel hauled for that.

Captain Kullah was pretty sweet for the whole week he was in charge during Basics... Although after seeing how Admiral Kane did her business in Battlestar, you'd have to wonder how well Michelle forbes would have sunk her teeth into the role?

Elizabeth Dennehy - couldn't get past she looked like her dad Brian in drag! Besides, someone that bad-ass would have been tossed out an airlock. :guffaw:

I meant before he died. I never got the impression that Janeway was all that fond of Cavit. Especially after he dissed Tom, since Tom was her reclamation project.

And that she had slept with his father. You know how mistresses always assume they're almost like y'know stepmothers even though there's an iron curtain between them and the children.

I don't think Shebly would have worked as Captain - her original spelling of Shelby is more authoritative. :)

Seriously though, her name was mentioned on DS9 a couple of times as captain of a starship but I don't think she was ever available at the right time to actually appear on the show. It would have been a nice follow-up to Best of Both Worlds.

As Lindley states she was a central character in the Peter David "The New Frontier" series of books! Which IMHO are fantastic books!
She starts out as the XO about the U.S.S. Excalibur and is promoted when Captain Calhoun is presumed dead!
After Calhoun returns, at the christening of the new Galaxy Class U.S.S. Excalibur Shelby is given a ship of her own! She and Calhoun also get married shortly after this!
A few book later Peter David jumped ahead a few years in the story arc and Shelby is now an admiral and her husbands boss!
As to the original question I think her character would have been fine but would not have fit the shows premise!
I believe the idea was for a new female captain, a character we had never heard of before!
Later, Petseal
