Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

I can soften a bit to it now that I understand how their relationship nurtures in the book.

Why did you need the book to tell you? How hard was it to really figure out that something between them led to Musiker and Picard getting close working on the type of mission they were?

I'm a fan of the series, and the book, but the book simply reinforces what people have been saying here for a while.
