Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

We all have hills we'll die on, but this one doesn't much make sense. She calls him JL, once, in private while he's an Admiral that we see. Regardless of what the comic or novel says, from a canon standpoint it could be the only time she ever references to him in that manner. It was at a time when a lot was going on, and she might have thought to talk to him as a friend instead of a subordinate.

I'm guessing that we are going to hear it at least a few more times over the next Seven Episodes.

Some people use how they address each other (nicknames, titles, etc) to provide an emotional shorthand for which "part of the relationship " they are trying to address. Even Spock did this to some extent, calling Kirk "Captain" when they were dealing with ship's business or the mission, and "Jim" when he needed to appeal to Kirk in a more personally accessible way.

I think it irritated me more in the novels when every ship used "Number One". It kinda killed it being unique.

I think the precedence was started by Pike when he called his first officer abroad the Enterprise "Number One." So we can deduct that by the 2360s it had become common for many Starfleet Captains to call his/her first officer "Number One" as well.

What's even odder, is the chorus of voices on this forum that are not only defending this writing decision, but attacking those who point out the absurdity.

It all goes back to the "10/10, shut up troll" mentality that has become pervasive in greater nerd culture. If anything is attached to your favorite property, we no longer use the scale of 1 - 10; we use 10 - 11.

The most boring, pedantic drivel you can find on TV will be given a "10/10" by fanboys as long as it features the character(s) they are invested in emotionally; and anybody who offers any form of criticism will be designated as a "troll" or "bot" to invalidate said criticism.

I like Picard so far. I think it has potential and that the second half is set up to be very good. That being said, the show has flaws. Many of those flaws are in the writing, and pointing that out does not make you the devil.

Everything you like is not a 10/10, and everything you dislike is not a 0/10. Just stop it.

How about YOU and others stop with the pedantic, anal-retentive insistence that some how Picard being given an affectionate nickname is terrible, canon breaking writing. It's supposed to relay how close these two characters are, and it's also used to establish what Raffi's personality is like. Also Picard didn't care. If he doesn't care why the hell are you getting so bent out of shape over it?

Lighten up a bit and stop taking all of this so god damn seriously.

In real life I've had a coworker ignore a facebook friend request after working with them for 4 years (with no indication in real life interactions there was anything amiss, even after it was ignored. And I wisely never brought it up in person).

Not everyone wants to be 'facebook friends' with their work colleagues. I certainly don't, but I'm picky with who I have as facebook friends in general. Having said that work colleagues do call me by an abbreviated version of my full name and I'm fine with it and actually encourage it.

After some reflection, I think I got it wrong. Stewart did a sketch with action figures. The Jon Stewart doll was on the john. A Picard figure interrupted with important info. As he left, Picard says, "Enjoy the number one."

Perhaps it's on YouTube. I'll check when I get home.

It's not so much your criticism of the show, as it is your criticism of the other posters around here.
Attack the show all ya want, but don't go after folks who disagree with you.

That is against the rules for all of us.

(and I do find myself slipping over that line occasionally as well, but the Mods in this part of the Forums are pretty lenient as long as one doesn't push it)



Also, I think you'll find, if you check out some of the threads with polls, that 10/10 and 0/10 is the outlier around here, not the norm.
