Would mankind be justified in running genocide against the Wraith?

?

The wraith eat people. That's what they do.

And it's not like humans eating cattle or pigs or such like. Bovines are not sentient. They don't have hopes and dreams and plans for the future and thoughts on the meaning of life and all the rest of that. Cows don't know they are being raised for slaughter, and when they walk into an abbatoir and a man walks up and puts a bolt gun to their head, they don't know they're about to die.

With humans and the wraith it's different. When a wraith turns up and sticks his hand on some poor sod's chest, he sure knows he's being sucked to death. Add to this the fact that it's pretty painful, and they inject you with chemicals to force you to stay alive through the whole agonising process. The wraith knowingly torture another sentient species to death routinely in order to feed. With their technological advancement and multiple millenia of history, they should be able to easily modify themselves to be able to sustain themselves by other means. But they don't care to.

Which leads to this proposition: The wraith long ago went over the moral event horizon. They are an abomination, and, should humanity ever find itself in a position where it had the technological / strategic means to wipe them all out, it would be completely logical and justified for humanity to do it.

Discuss.

I don't remember The Wraith eating anyone, he was just avenging his murder at the hands of some hot rod punks.

Oh, that Stargate show...

I voted yes. And the main distinction between people eating cows and Wraith eating people isn't in the sentience of the species, but in the possibility of alternatives. Humans don't need to eat meat, but Wraith apparently have no alternatives to eating humans.

This makes the Wraith less morally culpable than meat-eating humans, but this isn't about morals. It's about species survival. Since the Wraith have no alternative but to eat humans in order to survive, we can assume that no grounds for compromise will ever be possible. It's kill or be killed, so why pussyfoot around?

Go ahead and send this to the Stargate forum or form or from :p but we've already discussed it to death there.

Seconding Temis' post. Since they have no alternative, they can't be negotiated with, it is indeed "Kill or be Killed", so hit 'em with everything you got
