Would GR have liked DS9?

"What new spin-off? Certainly not the one Gene had nixed two years before, during the third season, when Michael Piller and Rick Berman had proposed a new series to Gene. I had asked him about it immediately after his meeting with Piller, and Gene said he wasn't interested in their proposal. He told me he had turned them down flat, saying that he didn't want a spin-off, and that he did not care for this one. I never heard another thing mentioned about it until the week after Gene's death. That same week Margaret [Loesch] was told about this new series, Piller and Berman received a go on something called Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Talk about timing. I wondered if it was just a coincidence that Paramount decided to go with a new Star Trek project less than one week after Gene's death." - Inside Trek: My Secret Life with Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry by Susan Sackett (Hawk Publishing, 2002).

Let me take this response in a slightly different direction. I think DS9 benefited from not having GR arround so as far the show is considered his passing was a good thing. Personally when I think of the possiblity that he would have imput into the show, it scares me. I think new blood was needed for this series to do what it did and I think GR for all his accomplishments would have held it back.

It depends.

The GR of 60's that gave us TOS gold would give a thumb's up. The one that gave us BoT and Bread and Circuses.

The GR of the 70's and 80's (ya know the chemically dependent one and the one that gave us the ultra shitty Final Frontier) prolly wouldn't have like the show, esp from the end of S2 on to the end.

He would have like the Sisko character
Hated the Kira character
LHAO at Quark and Morn

I'm glad he's gone, DS9 mighta sucked under his (lackp) leadership

Gene Roddenberry had nothing to do with The Final Frontier.

Without GR there would have been no DS-9 so I think the tread is valid, I think that after two series of having ships cruising around the AQ/BQ and still finding Klingons and Romulans hiding inside every nebula. I think he would have liked the creativity involved in introducing a brand new Trek, totally different from the previous two series and giving us Bajor, Cardissa, The Founders...ect. So, yes I think that GR would have liked DS-9...

Without GR Star Trek would not exist, but he barely even designed the trek universe. He gave a characters names and barely defined who they were, it was the actors who seemed to be the ones responsible for that. I read somewhere that he didn't even come up with the name Enterprise, although I'm not sure about this.

As for the Federation, Starfleet, the Prime Directive? They all seem to have come from Gene Coon, not Roddenberry. The Klingons? Coon again. The Vulcans? In The Cage Spock is shown to be emotional, it was only in subsequent episodes that Spock became unemotional and logical. This may have been Roddenberry's idea or it may have been the show's other writers.

Gene Roddenberry came up with the idea of a spaceship exploring space. He barely created the universe at all.

He probably would have done the same thing that he did for the Star Trek films he wasn't involved in; complain about it while it is in production and then claim it was all his idea after finding out that fans loved it.
