Would a prequel on the Ancients work?

What if the next Stargate series (let's call it Stargate: Origins) was a prequel and was about the schism between the Alterans and the Ori? Would such a series work? It would be a great opportunity to show a lot of background that up to now has only been mentioned. Maybe, we could see Destiny being built or see the first stargates being constructed. We could get all the details on how the schism that led to the Ori happened. But, would the show have to have Earth humans from the SGC or would the show work with no SGC characters as the main characters? Of course, if the show needed SGC characters, the pilot ep could involve an incident where a SGC team using a stargate is sent way back in time to the Ancients world and actually play a role in the development of the Ancients civilization.

No. It would be too much of a continuity lockout.

And the more de-mystify the Great Mysteries, the more watered down they become. Take the Borg for instance or an example that wasn't watered down the Shadows and Vorlons of Babylon 5. If all their mysteries were revealed, they wouldn't be nearly as awesome anymore

No it wouldn't, because it's a fanwank idea that only hardcore fans would be interested in. You need a massive brand to be able to get away with a prequel, and even then they're rarely any good.

Based on the Ancients that we've met, they're mostly assholes and largely unsympathetic characters. I'd prefer that they keep them a mystery.
Now, dust off the Ewok outfits and do a show about the Furlings and you've got something there...

I liked the Ancients better in the earlier seasons of the show when they were mysterious and not much was known about them. The fifth race et al, this idea of a great consul of aliens with the Ancients as probably one of the founding members. This is when the Ancients were at their best. Its like the Furlings, we think they are cool and mysterious now, but if we learned too much, it'd ruin them for us.

No, for the simple reason that prquels don't work. Take a look at Star Wars Episodes 1-3. Take a look at Enterprise. Take a look at Caprica.

Okay, that is a narrow view. The truth is I like the Star Wars prequels, and Enterprise did have its moments. But, what story is there for a show about the Ancients? Their split with the Ori was covered in The Ark of Truth's opening scene. We know they were basically unchallenged for millions of years until they met with the Wraith and got their asses kicked. Then they hightailed it to Earth and spread their seed among the population. You could probably get an episode out of this storyline, a two-parter if you pad it out. You ain't getting a season, and you certainly ain't getting a series.

I also don't think they have it within them to do the Ancients proper anymore. SGU was a good attempt, but it too was kinda boring at first. I would love to see a series dealing with the 4 great races at the peak of their existence, Nox, Asgard, Ancients and Furling, but I don't feel like they would be able to do it justice.

The Ancients were not very interesting to begin with so I wouldn't care to see a show based around them. Plus, the drawbacks of it being a prequel and being too "inside" to get a decent audience also kill it.

I would be interesting to see some write about such a thing, but no. The last thing needed now is another stargate show, that is just cancelled in the end.

The Ancients are far too boring to be a basis for a show.

How about Goa'uld vs. Tok'ra instead?

The last thing needed now is another stargate show
Reboot it right, and I'll bet it could be a ratings winner. People aren't sick of Stargate, they're sick of being bored by a boring show. They're always demand for something exciting and kick-ass, and who cares what it's called.

No, I can't see it because the Stargate universe as a whole has been about humanity, the Ancients have generally been part of the various show's mythology and worh better that way IMO.

I would consider the overuse of the Ancients and their "second evolution" nonsense one of the things that ruined later SG-1 and Atlantis.

^Yeah, the Ancients were far better as...well, Ancients - a vaguely human-like species from the distant past that came, created the Stargates, left advanced technology behind and vanished without a trace. That's all we need to know about them. It would be interesting if they had been treated more like the Furlings.

There is nothing at all interesting about that scenario. We know the good guys will win so where's the tension? And it's just as likely those three groups would turn on each other in a heartbeat, so the cause of their inevitable downfall is telegraphed from the getgo.

how about Earth's enemies building up to attack earth at once.

Wraith, Alliance, gouald.

Why would the Wraith even bother with an alliance? If they had the technology to reach Earth in large numbers Earth would be screwed and even if Earth could keep them at bay there are plenty of other planets in the Milky Way with human populations.

right, but their ships don't have shields and beaming technology is powerful against them, its also powerful against other enemies. Since we have 5 deadulus class ships, Earth is portected against all enemy.

Honestly I was a bit disappointed at them discontinuing SGU not because it wouldn't get exhausting see them skip from galaxy to galaxy...but the idea of a message in the background radiation of the universe suggests intelligence. Sort of a Prime intelligence that far predated the Ancients. I mean finding out that the Ancients were basically just humans from another galaxy made them fallible. So to basically enter a new Prime race at the beginning of the universe...well a version of Ancients for the Ancients so to speak. Who doesn't love mystique and origins of the universe type stuff?
