Worst stereotype in Trek...

By the end of DS9 their legendary cowardice was the butt of jokes aplenty.
I associate Jews with Israelis (a stereotype in itself?), and Israelis are legendary for bravery, courage and fighting skills.

Not exactly Ferengi.

:)

I guess they have to be with so many people trying to push them out of their homeland and out of existance. Strange how the typecasting of Israelis and Jews are so different. Never thought about it before.

^But, the episode implies that women cannot be Federation starship captains at that point. Despite that the (always evil and scheming) Romulans are apparently more progressive. (See: The Enterprise Incident)

Might there be a correlation between being evil and scheming and allowing women in positions of power? Or is that just sexist? ;)

Janice Lester couldn't be a captain, coz she was insane and she blamed her gender and not her personal characteristics for her inability to get a higher rank. And when when women (Number One) can be first officers, why not captains, commodores, admirals..
My little sister said: This is sad. She could have better life, if she had friends, and not lived alone on a remote starbase. You cannot be a captain, if you have problem with yourself and do not like other people.

Correct. It was indicated that she went insane because she knew she could never be a captain because she is a woman, no matter how good she might be if given the opportunity.

I took Janice's statement to mean that Kirk's world/career field of Starship Captains (both male and female) had no room for significant others.

Kirk did with Janice, what Riker did with Troi, left her behnd in favor of his career.

:)

I do not think it was clearly indicated. Everything we know about her, was what she said. World is full of people, who are definitely not insane, but still they do not have personal qualities to lead a starship.

Nah, it's a clear implication. It's just unpalatable because it's so dated. But, in 1969, it really was the intention that women couldn't be captains. Sorry.

^Right.

Let's not forget, the first female Starship Captain we ever saw was the unnamed Captian of the ill-fated USS Saratoga in STIV as played by Madge Sinclair.

And this was later retconned further with Captain Erika Hernandez of the NX-02.

I've always figured that she wasn't captain material, so therefore her insane justification for Starfleet not making her a captain was that women weren't allowed.

As someone else stated, in a 'Fleet where a woman could be a First Officer, of course they can be captain also. It entirely logical.
