Worst line readings

There's subtext to Kirk's line to Rand other than him reassuring her - because the fatal accident was avoidable, and he knew it. It was someone's fault, and that clearly was supposed to come through.

It comes through for me--that someone is Admiral James T. Kirk, hence the stiffness. I guess you think "it wasn't your fault" would have conveyed it better? I dunno--seems a little on-the-nose to me...

The "I need you, bones... badly" line is to me an example more of bad writing than bad delivery.

It should have been something like "I really need your help." Instead, it almost comes across as if Captain Kirk is declaring his love for him.

Agree and disagree.....

It's a poor line as written, but if Shatner had gone soft on the badly it wouldn't come off near as strange.

"I need you Bones....badly." instead of

"I need you Bones, BADLY." ugh :(

Kirstie's Saavik had.. some emotional overtones.. Curtis's had none, seemed pretty,,I don't know, bland.

But wasn't that also partly directing. From what I've read, Nimoy wanted Saavik to be 'more Vulcan'. Curtis' Saavik ended up very bland.

Well maybe, but it almost sounded like "David is dead, oh I broke a nail.."

With all these examples I find it's not so much what is said, but more of how they look when the lines are delivered. Kirk always looks blank and the voice is over emphasized.

Another one from TMP, shortly before “It’s how we all FEEL,” is Sulu’s “Why — Why it’s Mister —”.

In Takei’s defense, it’s a lousy line, and I feel sorry for him having to say it.

So she didn’t act like TWOK’s Saavik, the director didn’t want her too, and she’s not played by the same actress. Shouldn’t they have just given TSFS’s Vulcan another name instead of pretending they’re the same character?

Spock would've ended up looking like a dirty old man if he had THREE young female protegees in the films. :rommie:

Would've made more sense though. Curtis's Vulcan was the most unemotional one I think we've seen. Even the ones in ENT
had more emotion to them. T'pol at her worst had more character.

It would still have been two young female proteges, Saavik and Valeris. The TSFS/TVH Vulcan would not be a protege of Spock.

A lot of Nichelle Nichols deliveries are stinkers. I read that Bob Justman used to get frustrated with her because she would fluff her lines time and time again even though she only had a few words. I think I started a thread here a while back about her acting. At times she looks totally disinterested in acting with Shatner, which backs up the 'we hate Shatner because he's selfish' theory, or that she was indeed bored and wanted to leave.

Well, back to TMP with this one where Kirk bumps into Sonak on the steps at HQ after just getting off of the air-tram, they give a little exchange about the situation and then the close up of Shat giving probably his worst ever line delivery:

"It is my intention... To be on that ship... FOLLowing that meeting. Report to me in one hour."

To be fair, she also gave some very good readings when there was some meat to her lines. The whole exchange with Mr. Excitment in TSFS was funny and well done. And she had genuine sincerity when she said, "And Admiral....all my hopes" (I think that was the line).

I know I would not be super happy saying the same two or three lines over and over.

The "Captains Log" at the Beginning of Gamesters of Triskellon sounds like Shatner was incredibly bored.

Then there's the "WHAT's HAPPENING TO LT. UHURA!" line.

In "Shore Leave", Sulu says someone is beaming down from the bridge. I assume George Takei messed up saying that someone is beaming down from the ship, unless there's supposed to be a transporter on the bridge and Sulu can recognize some kind of distinctive beaming effect from it.

There's one in Journey To Babel that used to confuse me for years. Kirk calls engineering and says:

"Cut power on the port side..."
Power goes out.
Sounding annoyed, he says, "At MY SIGNAL..."
Pause.
"Cut starboard power."
Nothing happens.

For years I thought this was supposed to be humorous, that engineering was too gung ho and cut off power before Kirk could finish his instructions. But then he tells them to cut starboard power and nothing happens and he never gives the signal to cut the port side power, but again cuts starboard power. Of course, this wouldn't have confused me if Shatner read the lines correctly:

"Cut power on the port side." Power goes out. "At my signal, cut starboard power."

The script says "ship." Takei simply misspoke and the line was kept.
