It's not often the "Past Tense" two-parter gets listed. That's an interesting take. Someone else earlier in the thread mentioned it as well.

Past tense makes the list?

I think maybe some of the reason some would place it as the worst because of the way the 21 century America is portrayed.

I mean common give us/them at least some credit?

The 21 century was portrayed as drab and colorless-people are/were a lot more colorful and vivid than the one dimensional way they were portrayed in the episodes.

I mean the music, words people use to express themselves, clothes- Trek always seemed to have a hard time portraying contemporary humans unless it was before 1960 or something.

I wouldn't say it's the worst, for me, but it is a pretty cynical episode, almost preachy.

Good point. I can see why some Trekkies would out-and-out loathe it, then. I guess it is kind of depressing to consider that if I'm alive when the episodes take place, the writers seem to think I'll be in a really depressing world.

Then again, I'm a cynic by nature. I wouldn't be all that surprised.

I don't remember anything about "Change of Heart" but the premise, though judging by the premise I can see it being fairly bad. Worst in the series, though? Unique take.

I could go into detail about why Change of Heart was a travesty, but in an attempt to avoid a thread hijack I'll be succinct:

I can accept episodes like Move Along Home and The Passenger. They were produced early in the series. The writers were still trying to figure out where the show was going.

For a Season 6 episode to disregard everything we know about the characters, the Dominion War, Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek in general, is unforgivable. Topping this off with bad acting, mediocre direction, lousy set design, and an equally poor B story, you have the worst episode of the series.

Honestly, I enjoyed Move Along Home until they got to the generic fake cave set. The tone of the episode reminded me a lot of Voyager's The Thaw, one of my favourites.

Ah, I see. Well again, I've certainly never seen anyone feel so powerfully against the episode. I read Jammer's review on it last night after seeing your opinion, and while I certainly don't agree with Jammer 100% of the time (he gave "Sacrifice of Angels" a 3/4, and I'd give it like a 5/4 from memory) he gave "Change of Heart" a 2.5/4 and more relevantly, thought the predictability of the episode was the only problem.

So I'll have to wait 'til I get back to the sixth season to really formulate an opinion -- his or yours -- and I'll post it in my review thread, probably lengthier than necessary.

Well again, I've certainly never seen anyone feel so powerfully against the episode.

I think it is a personal gripe. It isn't so much the failure of the episode as the arrogance of the failure. The DS9 writers were always trying to write episodes that made you reevaluate your perception of the characters. They also desired that you question the nature of Trek, particularly in a time of war. Most of the time they did this successfully.

In this episode, Ron Moore pushed these conventions too far. Pretty much every character in the episode acts out of character, most of them to an unbelievable extreme. When you watch the episode, look at it through that lens.

what's funny is Change of Heart is one of the few episodes I've not seen! Now I really want to see it.

Wow someone who actually agrees with me on something! I listed Part 2 only, as I scored it 4.5/10. I thought Part 1 was a little better, as it scored 5/10. I didn't hate it, but it was the lowest scoring of that season for me.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't like it, either. It almost made my list. I found it rather depressing and unbelievable that Bell's death would have such drastic consequences such that the UFP would cease to exist and Earth would remain non-space faring into the 24th century. It wasn't as big as historical event as say, the 1673 battle of Vienna, the Roman defeat of Carthage, or other wars that were highly influential but could've gone either way.
