Worst Character Assassination Episodes

Oddish

Some Trek episodes just take a given character and take them far out of character, and make them look utterly awful. It's really one of Trek's more annoying phenomena.

It should be noted that some Trek episodes are NOT necessary character assassination. For instance, early DS9 episodes with Julian hitting on Dax... that's just how his character was then; his conduct in later episodes indicates character growth. Of course, holodeck facsimiles don't count (so "Hollow Pursuits" doesn't qualify), and Mirror Universe clones don't either. Also, if a character is in an altered mental state that isn't their fault, I don't regard that as assassination (so Deanna's craziness in "Man if the People" and Janeway's pulsar death run in "Scientific Method" get a pass). Sometimes, an OOC moment under reasonable conditions allows an actor to stretch a bit.

But some conditions aren't reasonable, and here are some of my picks, in no particular order.

1. Picard, "Homeward". Citing the Prime Directive, mon capitan allows an entire planet to die. And, he unloads on Nikolai about being unwilling to do the same.

2. Archer, "A Night in Sickbay". A seasoned Starship captain, acting like a sulky 9-year-old. You just want to lead him by the hand to a time-out chair and just park him there for ten minutes or so!

3. Kim, both "Resolutions" and "Nightingale". In the former, when Tuvok states his intention to follow the captain's orders, Harry has a childish meltdown on the bridge, and almost does more of the same in Tuvok's quarters. Then, in "Nightingale", despite having learned from excellent commanders like Janeway, Tuvok, and even Chakotay, he turns into a micromanaging nightmare.

4. Worf, "Let him who is Without Sin". Let me be clear, Worf's actions were not intended as terrorism: he built the uplink to drive people off Risa, not to harm them. But Worf is a disciplined and capable officer. He does not behave like that.

Alexander, Sons and Daughters.

They not only reversed all his character development to that point about wanting to pursue peace, they reduced his IQ by 50 points.

Also Kurn, Sons of Mogh. Just a terrible episode with a ridiculous conclusion that ruined his character and made no sense.

I love DS9, but they ruined Worf's entire family.

Picard: The Neutral Zone
"Why didn't you leave them dead?"

Phlox: Dear Doctor
"An entire species died out because I don't know what evolution is."

Riker: Pen Pals
"We should let this planet full of people explode because something something destiny."

Jayneway: about half of Voyager episodes
"They let schizophrenics captain ships now."

Geordie: Booby Trap
"What happens on the holodeck should really stay on the holodeck."

That travesty was actually part of the inspiration for me writing this topic, and I forgot to even mention it when I actually posted it. I am SUCH a muffinhead.

You did remember Homeward though. Neutral Zone is my distant second Picard pick, but I didn't want to repeat yours.

It made no sense that he ignored his child for two and a half years. But you could spin his character to justify that. But you can't justify that a character on a path of peace was suddenly the village idiot.

Worf was already spun that way. There are things that Worf was very good at. Parenthood was not one of them.

You're dead on about Alexander, though.

Two that come up in my mind at first (though there are undoubtedly more).

Fury. That they made Kes leave was already bad, but understandable. They just should have left the character alone after that. Why turn the character with probably the sweetest disposition in the crew Evil and then weave a crappy story around it? ('Yes, I was going to kill you all in the worst way imaginable but I guess I just forgot I actually love you!')
Homeward - this one already has been mentioned, for the same reasons I can't stomach this one.

Then, there are some episodes that make me seriously question the lead character's psychological stability, such as Equinox (Janeway), and For the Uniform (Sisko), where both captains, in my view, go way too far in their hunt on the bad guy, but I don't think I'd count them as character assassination - it probably just shows how most everyone has some hidden sensitive buttons that really shouldn't be pushed.

Geordie: Booby Trap
"What happens on the holodeck should really stay on the holodeck."

As a general rule, I agree. But I was fine with Hollow Pursuits.

Neither Barclay nor Geordi should be using real people as holodeck playthings. But with Barclay, given the man's social and emotional issues, you can at least understand why. He couldn't deal with the real world, so he created an imaginary one.

With Geordi, combined with his unsolicited efforts to seduce the Real McCoy, it just seemed more like stalking.

Spock and the entire bridge crew in STVI. Spock forces a mind meld on Valeris, she's screaming and it was all shot deliberately rapey, and the crew just stand and watch.

Fucking awful, nobody comes out of it looking good.

Sort of related to that, Chakotay and Tuvok in Blood Fever.
"Tom, you got to take sexual advantage of B'Ellanna for her own good."
The 90s really were a screwed up decade.

This could make for an interesting follow up episode of SNW, tbh.

I agree. STVI is one of my favourites, but that scene has always been questionable at best.

I've always been torn on Geordi during 'Interface' because I always felt the petulant chair banging just wasn't him. Also, it obviously wasn't his mother and I couldn't understand why Geordi would actually believe it was, he was too intelligent and experienced for that.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Phlox had saved the... whatever they were, the people who weren't Menk. Would he be accused of "keeping the Menk subjugated" by the fandom? For that matter, if Janeway had let Tuvix live, would people who unload on her for "abandoning Tuvok and Neelix"?

Probably yes to both questions.

That was an appalling one, all right. I think I wrote it off as an "altered mental state" episode, though.
