Some actors have more range and versatility, but saying someone "can't act" is really unfair. They can all act. If you don't get what I'm saying look at fan productions. No offense to the people who are doing some great work, it's just that it's taken a lot of hard work on the part of the New Voyages and Exeter crews to raise their skills to where the performances don't detract from the overall production. Acting ain't easy folks.

That's exactly what makes those fan productions unwatchable for me. All that time, trouble and talent, and the onscreen actors are just, just horrible and drag the entire work back down to "fan film" level.

Maybe we should do a poll about them, eh? :)

Well, I've really enjoyed the Tressaurian Intersection from the Exeter Crew and World Enough and Time from New Voyages was very good. I hope you gave them a chance. For me, a big part of the fun, is watching how those folks have worked to improve their acting skills. A number of them can hold their own with anyone, I think and the overall enjoyability of the productions is much greater in my opinion. Of course, your mileage may vary.

TOS: Shatner
TNG: Hmmm, that's a tough one, but maybe Mirina Sirtis even though I like her.
DS9:Brooks(although he's good in his cop show..forgot what it was called)
VOY:I loved all the cast, although both Beltran and Wang's acting was kinda bland in the end. I love both guys dearly though, but I agree that both of their characters were underutilized at times. :)

TOS: Walter Koenig (he is MUCH better on Babylon 5)
TNG: Maria Sirtis (and yet she is currently the most arrogant of them - incredible!)
DS9: If we include all recurring characters, Barry Jenner. But of the main cast, Ciroc Lofton.
VOY: Garrett Wang (boring!)
ENT: Linda Park (she had plenty of time to prove herself, but didn't).

TOS: Nichelle Nichols

TNG: Maybe Sirtis, but they were all good really.

DS9: Farrell

VOY: Kes woman wasn't that great

ENT: Montgommery, the guy can't act, definitely the worst. Bakula too was horrible in the role for 4 years and his facial expressions and strangely elongated head annoyed me. Also I'll be the first to vote for Blalock as well. She was ok some episodes, though strangely she had far more bad episodes in season 4 than any other one. The 'slightly emotional' T'Pol was very hard to watch.

TOS: Koenig
TNG: Sirtis
DS9: Brooks
VOY: Dawson
ENT: didn't watch much, although the befuddled Bakula comments were spot on

The original series---sorry, James Doohan.

Next Generation---Marina Sirtis

Voyager---They wrote and wrote and wrote all sorts of juicy stuff for Tom Paris and Robert Duncan McNiel sucked every drop dry before it got on screen. Since he actually had a major role, this was a deep wound in the show. And although Garret Wang had a minor role, I thought by Endgame the directors started pointing the camera at him for reaction shots with emotion. He always did a good job as a male ingenue. I think people just don't like male ingenues.

TOS: Koenig: I agree with others that Bester suited him much better than Chekov ever did
TNG: Sirtis, though she had some good scenes every now and then
DS9: The best cast of any series but I'd have to say the weakest of the main cast was Cirroc Lofton. So many of his scenes are dry and sound like he's reading off of a cue card
VOY: Robert Beltran: I thought he did a good job early on, but as the series went on, his performance seemed to get sloppier every year and by the end, it was apparent that he didn't care about the show at all.
ENT: Scott Bakula: Bakula is a decent actor, but again his was another performance that was incredibly dry and uninteresting. The role really didn't fit him well.

TOS: Majel Barrett Roddenberry as Number One/Nurse Christine Chapel
TNG: Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi
DS9: Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko
VOY: Garrett Wang as Harry Kim
ENT: Anthony Montgomery as Travis Mayweather

Ptrope said:ENT: Bakula! Far and away! I don't care how bad the scripts were, he never managed to add anything to them with a decent performance. Sorry, Scott, Quantum Leap is over and the 'befuddled' aproach just doesn't work when you're the captain.
That's so right a description of his acting in ENT. Absolutely spot on!

I agree with the comments other posters have made about Sirtis, McFadden and Farrell - unfortuntely, I've always thought that they were hired purely for their looks rather than their skills. TNG really suffers from having very poor female lead actors and the poorly conceived characters.

Leave the ladies of TNG alone!!!!!

My only problem with Sirtis is not her acting, but her relative shyness behind the scenes in terms of wanting to have a more active role ("politics"). Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was McFadden who always tried to put pressure on TPTB to make herself and Sirtis stand out in their own characters.

Now, don't you guys take this as a green light to hit on McFadden instead! ;)

For the first season and a half of DS9 I thought Avery Brooks was _terrible. The most wooden performance I have since since Al Gore's 2000 run for the presidency. He loosened up later. I have seen pieces of plywood with more personality.

Looking back at reruns, it doesn't seem so bad now.

They wanted Sisko to be this down to earth, ordinary Joe type. They wanted a Picard who drank beer. The problem is , is that isn't Brooks. Brooks isn't a beta wolf. He's an alpha lion. He's laid back but also intense as shit. When he brought that to Sisko later on the character got alot better. His work in "Far Beyond the Stars" is still the best performance I've ever seen in Star Trek. The end almost had me in tears. How that episode didn't get an Emmy nomination I have no idea.

The only actor I've never liked was William Shatner. I find his delivery and cartoon-like overacting annoying as hell. Alot of people call him a "ham". Which is a nice way of calling someone a bad actor.

Whoever that bearded fat guy was who played Assisant Chief Engineer Argyle in TNG in the first season, was truly bad.

It's an interesting topic though because the casts are very consistently good. It ends up being a character popularity contest really. There's no way one can really honestly say that Sirtis is any worse an actor than Frakes, or Burton, or McFadden.
Sorry my response was all TNG but I've just started rewatching it, hence the Lt. Argyle reference. That dude was horrible.

TOS: Walter Koenig
TNG: Brent Spiner (Yes, I really hate him. :brickwall:)
DS9: Nicole deBoer (regular), or Barry Jenner (guest)
VOY: Robert Beltran
ENT: Scott Bakula

And Denise Crosby. Btw was she fired or did she quit?

The way I heard it, she quit because the character had so little role to play. She did not want to stand on the bridge being eye candy (ah . . . but what eye candy!) for seven years.

The fact that she came back as Sela indicates that she left on good terms.

True, I'd forgotten about that.

Maybe it was just the character that sucked, not the actress per se.

TOS:
A tough one since aside from the principle actors, the rest were hired on mainly as set decoration. However I think Koenig won by and inch with his over the top screaming all the time.
TNG:
I'd have to go imediately with Sirtis on this one. I really do like her and all, but she was supposed to be an empath and the more emotional she got, the worse pretty much everything else got.
DS9:
Another tough one since I think this is the best ensemble of them all. I guess I would have to flip a coin on either Dax.........Terry Farrell. Well, there it is.
VOY:
Jennifer Lien. That droning monotoned self rightious voice must be what angels sound like in hell.
ENT:
Aside from Blalok and Billingsley, I thought they all kinda stunk. However, I would have no choice but to single out Mr Bakula as the worst of the worst. And here I thought he was awesome in Quantum Leap, and I even got all excited when I heard he was going to be doing Star Trek. But alas, I guess he's only capable of playing himbos with swiss cheesed brains.

TOS: Walter Koenig
TNG: Levar Burton
DS9: Terry Farrell
VOY: Garett Wang
ENT: Scott Bakula

Of those five, I'd say the worst was Terry Farrell. Just watch her ruin Rejoined, Change of Heart, Blood Oath, etc. She was a very flat actress who happened to be hot, but her performance is all the worse because of the strength in the writing.

TOS: Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and George Takai.

Why!!!????

:wtf:

:guffaw:

Their characters were barely in the series. This is pathetic.

DS9: Avery Brooks.

Wait. Don't tell me. Kate Mulgrew is better than Avery Brooks.
