World War On Earth In Post ST:TNG Era?

Then when the Vulcans come to mediate, they can be labelled "useful idiots" and as they go to leave earth, their shuttle is shot down in a "friendly fire" incident.
I'm really warming to this idea, there is lots of potential in it.

We are fleshing out this world war idea - if we are having a 20th century world war in the 24th century we should expect the same behaviour.
The other thing they could do - is placing their capatives in a room where they use gravity control to distort their sense of up and down, then couple that with low level sonics and bright lights. A few hours of that and they will get all the shield codes they need.
Oh -- even better low level tractor beams so they are constantly moved around the room at random moments to further add to their discomfort.

Sidetracking the original concept here - This idea would work tons better if it was set, not on Earth but on some UFP protectorate world or some neutral world that the Federation had interest in. Perhaps a 23rd century world in the middle of the Federation/Klingon Neutral Zone. With the Organian Peace Treaty in mind perhaps Starfleet would have to act like they did with the planet in TOS "A Private Little War." Instead of arming each side and making sure they are equal, perhaps a blockade would work better. The Starfleet blockade keeps others (Klingons, Gorns, etc...) out of the system.
Doesn't have to be in the Neutral Zone. Could be any world that the Federation would rather isolate and prevent the other Alpha Quadrant civilizations from influencing the conflict in some way.
If the conflict is on Earth then how do the Earth colonies react to all of this? Humans live on the Moon and Mars, plus have a station at Jupiter. Not to mention other colonies initially settled by humans.

You want to discuss a world war, that's what we are discussing - you can hardly criticise me if I find the moral aspects more interesting to discuss than the gunporn bits.

Well what's the trek angle to this all ? oiled-up muscle men running around with big guns is nice to look at those for those of that inclination but what's the deeper issue that we are suppose to engage with?
I second that... except that I don't think the United States is a despicable nation. We've had a despicable administration for the last eight years, but I am no more willing to characterize the entire American nation as being despicable because of Bush than I am the entire German nation because of Hitler, or the entire Israeli or Palestinian nations because of Ariel Sharon and Yassir Arafat.
But suffice it to say that the United States government has engaged in torture, has besmirched the good name of the United States, has engaged in unlawful detentions in violation of the US Constitution, has violated the writ of habeas corpus, and has done so for no damn good reason. It's disgusting and a violation of the principles of human rights, liberty, rule of law, habeas corpus, the Geneva Conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States Constitution, and basic human decency.
Now that is something I had considered.
With war being nonexistent on Earth for so long, the warring parties on Earth hire off world mercenaries to supplement their forces and train their green troops.
I envisioned a blockade by Starfleet in part to prevent the influx of mercenaries to Earth.
That discussion can be started somewhere else, just not here.
