World Cup and NHL 2016-2017 Discussion

Anyone following the World Cup of hockey? I figured with that going on and the NHL season right around the corner the discussion can be started a little early.

I've been casually watching the World Cup. Really disappointed with the US's effort but I was watching team North America tonight and Connor McDavid and Matthews are quite a pair. Something to enjoy for two weeks at least.

There is still a part of me that can't get over the "gimmick" of the World Cup as an NHL "eff you" to the Olympics, but the hockey has been great.

The US got screwed by bad coaching. Is Torts really the best American coach there is?

No. I think Sullivan would have been better. Also, the team was not formed very well. Screw the olympics. The US hockey management needs to bring the team back to respectability.

Not to sound like a curmudgeon but wake me up in October when REAL hockey begins!

Happy for Team North America so far though; that's one exciting group of players.

If the IOC wants to put an end to the whole will the NHL players go or not, tell Bettman and the owners if they don't go to South Korea, they won't be going to China, where the NHL wants to break in.

Regarding my own team: with Drouin having finally emerged and with Stamkos re-committed to the team, I expect the Lightning to compete for the division and for at least another Conference Final appearance. The supporting cast is very balanced, and Bishop and Hedman remain powerhouses at their positions.

I'm completely okay if the Leafs miss the playoffs, however, they need to take a step forward. That is my expectations.

The very little I saw of Austin Matthews makes me think the leafs will. You guys got a stud in the making.

Season starts in 2 days. I was watching a little of the Sharks last night (more had the game in the background) and Dell looks like a capable back up. Can't really say too much about them though.

Love this time of year. Hockey and Basketball are starting and Football is in full swing.

This is it folks, today is the day! Season begins. 4 games, all rivalries. Auston Matthews debut versus Ottawa; also hope McDavid tears it up against the Flames.

There is something to like about all four games. I'm a sharks fan so that's the game I'm focused on but I'm looking forward to seeing McDavid and Matthews.

Yeah, I'm honestly glad to see a good player on the Leafs. Canada needs a break.

They are both breaks for two franchises that have suffered for a long time. Hopefully neither management manages to futz it up.

McDavid is top in scoring after 2 games. And there he will stay for the remainder of the season.

Heritage Classic alumni game is about to start and some of these guys look old enough that they might break a hip as soon as they step on the ice. :p

They played an outdoor game today. Feels so early to see outdoor games in an NHL season. I get it was Winnipeg but still. If they really want to experience Winnipeg conditions, that game should have been in February.
