World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Three good games today. South Korea played very nicely, Argentina look decent and could have scored a hatful but for that Nigerian goalkeeper, and England/USA was nicely end to end and full of drama.

What a calamity for Green (read: hilarious). That's one spill the Americans won't mind though...

I imagine our friends in England aren't too happy

The tabloids are going to slaughter them. :D
Mr. Green should just ask the South Africans for asylum now.

I dunno. He made at least two redeeming saves later on which salvaged our point. He certainly made the biggest howler on the field tonight, but it could have been much worse.

Despite a disappointing scoreline, England performed more strongly than expected, which is good to see. Hopefully that bodes well against teams which don't match that as well as, regrettably, the USA did.

Someone should create a little meme that has a repeated replay of the spill, intercut rapidly with the word "HATE" in white letters on a black background.

Maybe that's just tomorrow's Sun though!

Reasonable game - more of a challenge than the others so far.

If anyone is gonna get slaughtered, its gonna be ITV, who should never be allowed anywhere near a football match ever again:

The US broadcast was actually really well done. Clear picture and I don't think there was a single commercial break outside of half time

Mmh. It's no fun supporting England. Every time, they enter the competition with high hopes and then end up either playing rather shitty or if they're actually playing well they get thrown out of the tournament by some bad fortune.
They were quite strong in the beginning but then not so much, and I thought they actually played pretty bad, lots of imprecise passes, very few impulses from the midfield. If they don't improve, it'll be bye bye in the eigth finals for them.

Argentina was very good, I think, but they were quite careless with their chances. That can end rather badly, especially against better teams than Nigeria. Then again, Nigeria's goalie was excellent.

Holy crap, that's absolutely ridiculous. Who the hell cuts away from a soccer match while it's still being played to show a damn commercial? That sort of amateurish junk doesn't even happen over here in the States.

Good first half, but was it me or were the English Coach and Howard pissed off a lot. The coach even looked angry when England scored, and Howard doesn't look like he's having a very good day, with the early goal and the hit he received.

Capello is always angry. He's never happy, even when we win. There's always something the team can improve on. :D
Yep. That's the Permanent Scowl of Doom(TM). I don't think I've even seen Capello smiling during a match. Or even outside, now that I think of it...

So many shots on the American goal, so many wasted... :(
Yeah, the final count for shots was 19 for England and 12 for the US I think.

Not the 1st time that's happened on ITV either, they 'missed' an extra-time winner for Everton against Liverpool in the Cup a few seasons ago.

Suffice to say that we are not amused tonight:

I think the Argentines got a little too relaxed. Especially on defense, where they didn't look very Argentinian and let the Nigerians get awful close to a +1 bunch of times toward the end. With Enyeama (Nigerian goalie) and Messi, it was basically "permission to score: DENIED!" Messi's "WTF, I totally had that!" expressions were hilarious. Definitely gotta step it up, though. But then, it seems, they're one of those teams that regularly improves as things go along.

Poor Green. I think that horrible ball they're forced to use played a big part in that slipping past him, to be honest.

No, not at all. Players have grumbled about the ball in every tournament for the past forever. The reality is that it's not much different from the ball they play with in their national leagues, and it's not much different from the one the tournament before.

The argument would have more weight if the ball was compared to the one from say, 1950 - but not to the ones they've been playing with week in/week out for the last three years at home.

Ha, I saw what they used in that England/USA game back in 1950. That must have been annoying to play with.

But yeah, after I posted that I was watching some of the highlights, and I take back what I said. He probably just took his eye off the ball, maybe got ahead of himself because he knew it was just a routine play.

I think he just misjudged where the ball would end up and thus didn't fully catch it so that it bounced off to the side. At least, that's what I can gather from the replays we saw.
It would be wrong to blame him for England not winning, though. They were just overall disappointing, I think. If they hadn't grown complacent after their early goal, they would have won this, despite Green's mistake.
