World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Domenech should have brought two forwards much sooner. I wonder why I watched the first half at all. The last 15 minutes were entertaining, the rest not so much. Meh.

Well, well, well, at least it's not lost.

I've heard some very interesting vocabulary in my neighborhood

To be frank, I can understand, the defense wasn't very good during the few matches before the world cup.

Meh, that was a boring game. France did better towards the end, but as Uruguay's defence held their own, it wasn't going anywhere.

The first day of a World Cup, and we are almost as clueless about who's getting out of Group A as we were before it.

Damn I know he's a striker, but Anelka is one selfish bugger isn't he!

France really should have won that, I think they're going to rue not doing so, anyone can get out of that group now!!

Well, the match was less fun that I hoped. Too bad. I have to admit, France was worse than I thought, but you have to pay respect to Uruguay for boxing them well. It will be an harrowing fight in Group A.

I was able to watch some of the matches at work, and they were a bit on the boring side. Also, can the ESPN announcers show a little more emotion please? I recorded the games but since I watched them at work (Spanish version), I wanted to just go to the Goals. No emotion, no passion. Compare that to the Goal call in Spanish and there is no comparison. The "Goal" spanish call is one of the most awesome things you'd ever hear in sports. ESPN makes it so boring.

Also, are the standings based on goals scored? That means South Africa and Mexico have an upper hand right now because they both have 1 and the other two have 0? Good work for South Africa too. Want to see the home country do well.

I halfway wonder what the TV ratings will be here for the US game tomorrow. The general reaction I got from people I've talked to was that they would check it out for a bit if they were home, but weren't going to plan their day around it.

The game is on around noon, right? You think that'll be good or bad for the ratings?

It's tempting to wake up at 4am here to watch it. I know I'll be up early on Monday morning to watch the Aussies play Germany.

'S funny, because one of the things I really enjoy about soccer commentary is the reserved, British style. Or, at least, that's what we get. It's rather refreshing, I find, compared to the overly talky commentary we usually get in North America.

Wilco - It's on at 2:30 PM I believe for those of us on the East Coast, 11:30 AM on the West Coast, and somewhere in between for the rest of the country.

I'm not a TV exec, but they always play big sporting events with a national audience ridiculously late, presumably because the ratings are better. World Series and NBA Finals games start after 9 PM in the East. More people are home sitting around the TV then.

The thing with midday games, other than the NFL, is that a lot of people aren't going to give up a round of golf, mowing the lawn, shopping, etc. to base their whole day around a game.

Parra - I remember in years past when the Olympics were in Beijing or Sydney, I would watch USA basketball games at 6 in the morning while I was getting ready for work. It's kinda wild.

Yes, when teams have the same amount of points, their standing is first determined by the goal difference, then by the number of goals scored. Unless the FIFA has decided on a different crazy scheme...

The game at the moment, South Korea against Greece, is pretty entertaining. I like the South Korean style. They make the Greeks look rather old, though they should make more of their chances.

Greece possibly is the worst team at this World Cup, how the hell did they qualify??

And yeah, South Korea has a very entertaining style.

Awww, the sockeroos are SO gonna get punished by the Germans! :D

I'm hoping for at least a draw against the Germans.

But Greeks have been very poor in this match.

The Australian broadcasters were saying there were ranked last of all nations, as Greece didn't score any goals during WC in 94.

Well, the Greeks have been getting stronger. Maybe they should have started with two strikers... ;)

Greeks are boring and for some strange reason, I always expect Asians to play in a Captain tsubasa style, I'm very disappointed
And that's official : I want to kill those vuvuzela players (along with the guy who thought that was a good idea to ring a bell in my street in the middle of the night, but that's another story...).

Watched the two matches this afternoon. Yes, the Greeks were unbelievably poor, with an easy win for South Korea.

Argentina vs Nigeria was more exciting. While the Argentinians came away with a victory, by all rights they should have been up a lot more than one-nil. It was some nice playing by the Nigerians that stopped that. Overall, not an impressive start for one of the favourites.

And now, the match I've really been waiting for, and England had better not lose to the USA. I don't think they will, but there is that possibility, and I'd rather it didn't happen.

I'm not expecting great football with this one but it's going to be fun ;)

Greece/South Korea was on too early (Not waking up at 4 in the morning on a Saturday) but I did see the Argentina/Nigeria match. Very surprised at that game. I thought Argentina was one of the favorites (What was the ranking I saw, Argentina 7th and Nigeria 27th?) and Nigeria held their own. That was an impressive goal too with the head shot.

Looking forward to this US game. Hope they pull it out, and what we've seen from some of the underdogs already, there is a bit of confidence there. I really hope they don't play like they did against Ghana in the last world cup and get somewhat embarrassed. That was not fun.

Still - largely a comfortable win. They look like a team that can improve substantially as the tournament continues and that's all you need from the first game.

Woo hoo US vs England. Lets hope that they make England work for it :p

I was able to get off work to watch it, will be tuning into the Spanish channels. At least they have some passion
