Working titles for the Starfleet Academy books - and a rescheduling

Re: Working titles for the Starfleet Academy books - and a reschedulin

these are aimed at young girls? Also are they featuring new characters?

Re: Working titles for the Starfleet Academy books - and a reschedulin

I wish these weren't "young adult" books. I used to read the TNG and one or two TOS YA academy books when I was little, but I quickly upgraded to the "real" novels. At 26, I have zero interest in reading books for early-teenagers.

Academy: Collision Course and The Best and Brightest proved to me that grown-up academy books are worthwhile. I hope Pocket realizes this too and launches a proper nuTrek academy novel line - and that the Shat/R-S's continue their Academy series with Trial Run.

but equally, surely it's a good thing there is trek material for that age group?

I guess so. I don't deny my wish for grown-up nuTrek academy novels is entirely selfish :)

Huh? They're aimed at early-teen readers in general, though given the subject matter, one would expect them to get more male than female readers. What would've given you the idea they were directed at girls specifically?

Also are they featuring new characters?

I gather they're about the Academy experiences of the Abramsverse versions of Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, etc. -- basically filling in that three-year gap in the film (though I don't know if they'll cover Spock's earlier tenure at the Academy as well). Although I'm sure there will be original characters appearing alongside them.

Well maybe times have changed, but when I was a teenaged lad, a book that promised to be 'filled with romance' wasn't top of my reading agenda and I don't think it was a favourite of many of my chums.

"Filled with romance"? Seriously?

It'll be the preening tweening Kirk/Gaila chronicles, then. She'll ignore Kirk at the Space Dance and he'll go all Emo. A depressed Kirk (now wearing a black uniform, black hair, guyliner and black lipstick) threatens to leave the academy to "work on his music". Bones talks him out of it. Kirk rediscovers his adventurous spirit by driving another antique car off a cliff and then wins Gaila back from the evil Cupcake by winning a dance-off in the academy meeting hall, in front of all the Admirals. Kirk is awarded a commendation for original dancing. The end.

It doesn't surprise me that the books will be trying to appeal to the young female market that's gobbled up Twilight, but there's no reason to assume they wouldn't be aimed at young male readers as well. Those don't have to be mutually exclusive. Historically, the Star Trek fanbase has been pretty gender-balanced.

I'd buy this. :bolian:

I got so fed up of waiting for an adult version of the Academy events set in the DS9 era that I wrote my own!

(Shameless plug - it's in the Fanfic section!)
