Wouldn't Starfleet rather have a huge surplus of men and women with command experience after a recent war?

I can see him become the first Starfleet captain to command a starship.

Am I misssing something with this sentence? We've seen lots of starfleet captains commanding starships...

The second loss may have led to a downgrade (we have no proof that the Sovereign he got was more prestigious than his earlier Galaxy, or the Federation Flagship, or anything)

Technological advancement and prestige are not synonymous. For example, torpedo boats or destroyers of the late 19th century might have been more advanced than the larger but more traditional ships in the navy, but they didn't have the cachet of their more time-tested fleet-mates.greenmystik said:
Didn't Geordi say that the E-E was the most advanced ship in the fleet? I'd hardly call that a downgrade.
