Word from DC Entertainment: "Superman" movie not in near future

Disappointed about this recent news. I understand Warner Bros decision...but damn it man (does best McCoy impression) how hard is it to come up with a decent to epic Superman movie??? You accomplished this with Batman Begins/The Dark Knight. It's looking like Green Lantern is on the right track. Why is Superman so damn hard?? i wonder if we will start hearing over the next few months any more of the proposals or pitches that Warner Bros took last fall/winter.

1. Over in the Batverse, Batman is currently on the run.

2. It's a given that no normal person has a chance of catching Batman.

3. The authorities call in Superman to deal with the Batproblem. Fun ensues.
They already thought about doing the 'Superman vs. Batman' film, but they opted to do separate films first. That was a good thing for the Batman franchise, but a horrible one for Superman.

Just give the Superman franchise to Christopher Nolan.

Christian Bale can be Superman, Liam Neeson can be Brainiac, Aaron Eckhart can be Lex Luthor, Cillian Murphy can be Bizzaro, Gary Oldman can be Perry White, Katie Holmes can be Lois Lane in the first movie and Maggie Gyllenhaal can be Lois in the second movie. :)

I'm surprised because (b) I was pretty sure that the recent lawsuit would result in WB being anxious to knock out some sort of movie, even as just a 'Shaft the Siegels' operation. The Corman Fantastic Four movie did come to mind - even some sort of mid-budget effort, say in the Blade/ Hellboy type budget range.

The fact that they're not doing so makes me think that they're not interested in Superman in the long run - if they were planning on making lots of bucks from this previously-lucrative franchise, then I'm sure they'd want to ensure they had to pay as few of those bucks as possible to the Siegel estate.

Of course, it's possible that WB are finally prepared to be decent to the Siegel estate ... and it's also possible that a pig will fly ...
As I said before, the rights situation with Superman isn't comparable to the situation that led to Corman's FF film. Even if they knocked out a Superman film in the near future it wouldn't extent their hold over the Superman rights beyond 2011. It would only enable them to avoid reaching terms with the Siegel estate on that one film - to squeeze out one more film under the current division of rights. They'd still have to come to terms with them on any future Superman productions made after 2011.

I'm sure that Superman is still a priority for Warners and DC Entertainment, but I think they may want to see the legal process through - either substantially winning the case or settling it - before moving ahead with a new film.

I got at least 5 Superman movies ready to go right now. I don't know what it is so hard to make a movie about a guy who as how many google stories told. He has been inimated more than anyone and they can't figure out how to make a good Superman movie. They really should be fired or quit cause they are embarrassed and ashamed.

No, people misunderstand, she said no movie would be made in the near future. It will be set in the present of course! Everything's fine!

I've got a trilogy of my own in progress here. I don't think the ideas are the problem. Seems more a problem of will power on the executives side along with execution on their part.

They have other DC films in the pipeline and the new DC Entertainment management is going to be looking at a strategic plan for all of their major characters over the next few months. The fact that they don't have immediate plans to move forward with a new Superman film is no reason to fly off the handle. Seeing the current legal dispute over the rights to a conclusion and letting some more time go from Superman Returns before launching an all-new Superman film is a reasonable approach.

My thought on this is that people in a post 9/11 world just don't relate to a near god like figure with almost no flaws.

Someone like Batman has the cool gadgets and is flawed and dark. Or Peter Parker who's near broke.

Then while Superman was gone people started the "Superman is a dick" movement.

BS. The only people that don't get Superman are Singer, TPTB at WB and people that like the anti-hero brooding dark character types for whatever their personal reasons. Everybody else gets Superman hence why they disliked SR so much cause it was not Superman. People didn't go all sad when Reeves died for nothing.

I wish people would stop with the "Superman Returns was poorly received" meme...

$390 million is good box office. The problem was the WB assigned all the aborted projects to it's budget, throwing off the return on investment ratio. No way in H*ll that movie cost $270 million to make.

Was it perfect? No. But it is a lot better than the grousing internet blowhard community would have you think!

True to an extent, but, one way or another, the WB isn't interested in continuing it.

Their general inability to make a Superman movie has to be marveled at; I mean, seriously, Clark has a lot of great stories that would be fairly easy to make a film. It's not rocket science.

You are right. Superman Returns was so great that they made a sequel to it that was..........oh wait they didn't.

I still watch it every few months. The airline rescue is always the highlight. I'm also beginning to notice the beautiful cinematography in the Daily Planet scenes. But I don't favor another return to the Donnerverse in a future film.

The film is stunningly gorgeous. The scene with Superman and Lois Lane on the rooftop of the Daily Planet is just beautiful.

Also, re: Captaindemotion. Batman Begins wasn't really a "financial disappointment". It didn't open hugely ($45 million opening weekend), but it went on to gross four times that, ending domestically with $200 million, which is pretty unheard of. Plus the film did great on DVD and like you said really scored with fans and critics.

Which is true and sad all at the same time. That sequence starts at around the 45min mark. The highlight moment of the film is over and done with then its down hill from there.

Sure $390m would be good box office WW most times but to cry unfair at the WB for rightfully assigning decades of production cost is a gross misunderstanding by some. It is what it is, now perhaps had the budget been $100-125 + those prod.costs then a sequel could've happened. Blame Singer for making a costly film but not WB for correctly and rightfully keeping the accounting correct. How would you have assigned those cost DDuck? The movie cost $200 and that is high. Its why Disney bailed on the Narnia sequel Dawn Treader after Prince Caspian and when Fox took it over said get the budget down. A Transformers 3 sequel better rein in its budget. Look how high G.I.Joe was? Terminator Salvation as well. Studios have got to get this back under control. If they do and the product is still good, which I see no reason it can't be, franchises can/will continue.

Yes, it's been well established Superman is a voyeur, no need to bring it up. :p

Smallville is better than Superman Returns, or any of the Superman movies. It's the live-action Superman for the current generation. There, I said it.

(I'm not sure I believe it myself, but...;))
I can tell. Even you don't believe yourself...;):guffaw::cool::shifty::(
