Woodworking and Carpentry....

Any into woodworking or carpentry here? I'm very interested in developing this as a hobby. Very long story, kinda shortish. My family is full of carpenters and woodworkers. My brother, all my uncles on my mothers side. They all make their living as carpenters or woodworkers. My brother can build almost anything, my Uncle John is an amazing woodworker. He makes beautiful cabinetry and tables. I am the computer guy of the family, only one to graduate college. Well until my sister did, 20 years later. I've felt a little left out, if you know what I mean.

Recently I've felt this calling to try my hand at this. I've had the urge to try and create something out of wood. I want to start small, thinking about making some cutting boards for christmas/hanukkah this year.

Anyone else do any projects like this, or get into this recently or has been doing it for years and would like to chat about it.

My uncle was quite the woodworker back in the day. He also worked with acrylic, using a Dremel tool to carve shapes from the back, then painting inside the shapes.

I never had that level of skill, or the patience. If you have the skill, go for it, on whatever level you want.

I've built several pieces of furniture for myself/family/friends. That was back when I worked at a place where I had access to the tools to do that kind of work, but I don't have that anymore. When I moved into my house, I built a shed and a couple of chicken coops. Last year I took on my biggest project. I replaced the roof and siding on my house and built a small addition.

It's the closest thing I have to a hobby.
