So has anyone else seen the new Wonka movie? We saw it the other day and found it very enjoyable, and a fitting tribute as a prequel to the Gene Wilder version from 1971. Timothee Chalamet (who is also starring in the modern version of Dune) portrays a younger Willy Wonka, getting his start 25 years before the era of the Wilder version.
Like that version, Wonka is a musical although many of the pieces are original to this film. The main exception is new lyrics for "Pure Imagination" and Hugh Grant doing a couple of Oompa-Loompa songs. The cast has excellent chemistry and it would be fair to say the film doesn't take some of the sillier elements too seriously, which is a plus. Some parts of the film are tremendously silly, in a good way IMO (the church being the main one I can think of
). It's a pretty decent balance.
This film also has an origin story for Willy's desire to become the best candymaker ever, but I think it's handled much less awkwardly than how the 2005 film did so, and feels more solid within the larger story.

I've seen a number of reviews comment in a similar vein, that they didn't feel like many of the new songs have quite the same impact as those in the Wilder version. But for myself, I'd say it's another YMMV thing.
