Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins is Directing a Rogue Squadron Movie

Sorry, noob question.

Does Rogue Squadron have anything to do with Rogue One?

Because that same word 'Rogue' appears in the title. Might refer to a species, or culture? Like calling it "Samurai One" but more starwarsy?

There was a Rogue Group in ESB, in the EU that later became Rogue Squadron. It was formed out of Red Squadron. It was the best of the best of the rebellion.

There were 3 popular video games named after it.

In the New canon it was named by Luke in honour of Rogue One.

You know I did wonder if the more casual fans would be confused by the Rogue One/Rogue Squadron titles. Guess that answers that question!

took me a moment when I first read it.. Rogue Squadrom.. Rogue one.. does not compute... then.. Ah.. Squadron.. okay!

Regardless if its set between ROTJ and TFA or after TRoS, I hope in some way Wedge is a major player. My favorite side character since the OT and I love the books and comics from the 90s. I'd be up for getting some canon love for Wedge.

Hell, I remember when the title for Rogue One was first announced (but no plot details or any casting yet) there was heavy speculation that it would be a Wedge movie.

Anyway, this certainly sounds like a cool movie.

This.
I have to admit I'm torn about the recasting, but at the same time, Rogue Squadron has to have Wedge be a big part of it, at least in my mind.

Excited for this too. Liked WW allot and WW84 looks like it will be solid too.

Goes without saying I think this news confirms if it wasn't already the Rian Johnson movie series is kaput too. Crazy to think Disney had plans for a SW movie a year not long ago and now we will have up to a 4 year gap between them now. Clearly a huge reset going on with that franchise.
Honestly, aside from this film, I am not enthused with Disney at this point. The rest they did after Solo soured me considerably on their handling of it. Yes, I was impressed that Iger went "we screwed up" and scaled it back so they could manage it. But, this announcement feels like a full reversal of that decision and that they will just screw it up again.

The announcements are great but I'll hold off much excitement, save for if this Rogue Squadron is set after the Sequels. I want more of the Sequel type life.

Indeed, precisely because the character is exactly this amount of obscure AND notable means getting some other actor to play him would feel rather pointless.
Well, I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong, and what good would that do? ;)

The newer fans would be like "who's this guy and why should I care?" while the old fans would be like "...that's not Wedge."
The only recasting Star Wars fans haven't widely embraced is Alden Ehrenreich, and that's arguably more due to his movie and the drama that surrounded it than his performance. The fans have been more than pleased to go along with most recastings.

I never got that. In TESB, Wedge was Rogue Three, and Luke Skywalker was the actual Rogue One. (And I didn't think for a hot second that the XW/RS books would be adapted into the RO film.)

I think the belief was that it could be post-ROTJ with Wedge being in charge of Rogue Squadron, even if it wasn't an adaptation of the books.

Whatever, it obviously didn't pan out that way.

I'd think there is at least a decent chance the might get Denis Lawson back, he came back for The Rise of Skywalker, and he also voiced Wedge in Squadrons, which just came out a few months ago.

There's no story to tell in the ST. Hopefully it would be set during the GCW or its immediate aftermath.

Did I say “in the ST?” No. I said after. Having a wide open space ahead of it allows for endless possibilities. Admittedly, yes, I would prefer during the civil war, but I’m open to others.

They can make one. That's what writers do. They make up new stories.

Shocker. Shocker, I tell ya!

You gotta love a good factless statement.

Anyway, considering the focus right now, I'm asuming this will be either during the Galactic Civil War itself, or just after. Of all the times where this squad was active, this is right now the most well known, and I think Disney is going to want to focus on familiar territory a lot.
