Wonder Woman or Power Girl? (comics)

I have been thinking of ordering some comic book for myself from DC comics and Ive narrowed it down to two options: Wonder Woman and Power Girl:)

So, Wich one would be better, and why?..or should I just go order both:shifty:?

Also, is there any good comics on the Marvel side that would be worth ordering, annual ones I mean?
( Im bit out of touch with mainstream comics these days:lol:..)

Thanks on advance:):bolian:

I used to read Wonder Woman up until recently, but then I switched to Power Girl because it had more humor and a character I could relate to more (yeah, she's got superpowers, but she still is a person trying to find a place to fit in--she doesn't have it all together yet and sometimes can't worry about that).

Wonder Woman is the more iconic of the two, and her stories are more often than not rooted in her Amazon mythology and can be large scale adventures at times. In comparison, Power Girl is a bit more character-oriented, more smaller scale, and has quite a few tongue-in-cheek moments. I would call Power Girl a borderline superhero comedy while Wonder Woman more of a superhero drama.

The problem with both, however, is that they are currently in transition with new creative teams coming onboard in both titles very soon, so the direction of both books could change considerably. I think the plan is to incorporate Power Girl more into the DC Universe by upping the action/adventure level and using more Justice Society elements into her stories, while Wonder Woman (under new writer J. Michael Straczynski) is probably going to go for more epic stuff, redefining her role as the supposed toughest warrior in the DC Universe.

Personally, I'm sticking with Power Girl, but I'll try out JMS' first issue of Wonder Woman to decide if it's worth getting back into that...

In regards to Marvel, I've been into the X-Men and the Avengers. Both franchises are currently coming to the end of big storylines that will ultimately see them move in new directions under the "Heroic Age" era currently being planned for the entire Marvel Universe in the next few months.

Well lets see, they both have hopelessly confusing back stories, highly revealing costumes, varying power levels, useless secret identities, horrible rogues gallries and small reader bases. Guess I will go with the blond in this case.
But seriously I find the current PG comic to be a very fun read in todays comic world. WW on the other hand still doesnt quite click for me in her own book but I find her to be a needed member of the JLA for some reason.

I've been disappointed with the post-Infinite Crisis Wonder Woman. When they first "relaunched" her she was supposed to become in most respects an updated version of the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman-as-secret agent version of the character from the TV series. There was this whole bit about her joining a top-secret organization (not too far removed from Checkmate), and there was a tantalizing plot thread, never to my knowledge followed up on, that her job might require her to kill people - this in the post-Maxwell Lord era, and also at a time when Checkmate was exploring the morality of "ends justify the means" though DC wussed out and dropped this from the Checkmate title before doing much with it.

But within a few issues, Wonder Woman went sideways. There was an overlong story arc involving some sort of netherworld that was just boring (it didn't help that my local comic shop for some reason actually skipped an issue for no particular reason, so following the narrative was even harder). The whole "secret organization" subplot - including a romance - sort of faded into the background. And then there were the talking apes who, even coming from the company that gave us Gorilla Grodd, were just a little bit shark-jumpish.

I ultimately gave up on WW. These days I might buy an issue if the art is particularly nice, but otherwise it lost me.

Power Girl, on the other hand, has managed to keep focused. Anyone familiar with the John Byrne era of She-Hulk will see PG is a kindred spirit to Jennifer Walters (in fact I wish we were back in the days of Marvel-DC crossovers because I'd love to see a Power Girl-She Hulk crossover). The only thing they haven't done is break the fourth wall with PG (one of She-Hulk's unacknowledged powers, during Byrne's era anyway, is the fact she's the only Marvel superhero who is actually aware that she's a character in a comic book). There's been a lot done with PG's character since Infinite Crisis, and so far the comic hasn't gone sideways. My favorite story arc so far (and this isn't a spoiler, really) is the one guest-starring Sean Connery from Zardoz. Believe me - if you know the movie you'll recognize it when you see it!

So I definitely recommend Power Girl over Wonder Woman these days. It's simply more entertaining and they seem to be sticking to plan, as opposed to WW which has undergone almost as many "do-overs" in the last few years as the Legion of Super-Heroes.

I haven't read WW but the first trade of Power Girl was pretty good. Good blend of action and humor and GREAT artwork. Unfortunately that creative team is departing so I'll probably stop getting it after that. I do want to read WW I just never got around to to the trades yet.

Power Girl was been consistently great, both fun and funny. I think there's one trde out with another to come. That should collect the entire Gray/Palmiotti/Conner run. Unfortunately they're leaving the book and DC is bringing in Judd Winack to fuck things up.

Wonder Woman....sadly for DC's premier female hero hasn't been very good for a long, long while. Really she was only great when George Perez was on the book and that was over 20 years ago (although I'm one of the handful that liked Byrne's run). I'll be giving JMS a shot, but he's on a very short leash. I think he's good on his creator owned stuff (Rising Stars, Midnight Nation) but is way more miss than hit working on company owned properties.

Try reading the new Ms. Marvel from the start. While it drifts off in to company crossover tie-in territory occasionally, for the most part it's good, old fashioned superheroing unburdened by having a lead character who is boringly miserable and hates being a superhero like a lot of books.

Never have had an interest in Power Girl from a character perspective. She is/was type of Supergirl on an alternate Earth way back when. They've tried hard to make her relevant. Her back story is the most convoluted after Hawkman as I see it. I don't like overly comedic stories for characters that have never had that portrayl before and she hasn't.

Wonder Woman is my choice between the two and with JMS coming on board I find that a good fit. He can tell the large type stories and character pieces that fit her character.

As for Marvel they've just cancelled Ms.Marvel back in March. Black Widow just started an ongoing last month, surprise, surprise. You could probably still find it at your LCS. I tried out issue #1 and would grade it a solid B score.

I assume you only have interest in the finer gender? Otherwise I'd recommend Moon Knight, I enjoy that book as well.

I would suggest that you read both Power Girl and Supergirl, both are great titles. I love the storylines in Supergirl now, and I think that they stand out quite well.

Thank you all, for the suggestions and ideas:)
Here is what I decided:

Im planning to buy the Power Girl trade(s) and get to know her more:cool:

If you have any more suggestions related to the topic of "good DC or Marvel comics to order or buy", feel free to post them here or PM them to me, thank you.
Have a good one all:bolian:

What a bizarre image of Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. Granted, it was probably made to show off the three most known DC female superheroes, but in terms of current continuity, Barbra-as-Batgirl never was around to meet/interact with current-Supergirl.

There is a cool Power Girl fanfilm that was made sometime ago....(Actually, there were two, but the first one was better)...

Hello all:cool:
Well...I am still thinking of ordering "Power Girl" (even though I allready ordered Supergirl and WW)
What holds me off, is the huge bashing that the new writer of PGs upcoming issues, is getting on the message boards:vulcan:
Is this guy Judd Winick some sort of Satan:devil: in the world comic book writing:confused:??..because so many seem to be angry to him.
And should I be better off not ordering PG, because he is on board:confused:?

Plus..is the new "Birds of Prey" any good?
I watched the TV-show but havent read the comics really..
