Contest: VOTE Women of Star Trek

I'll send you links by conversation. The mods don't really like it when we aggressively advertise our stuff.

It's a spoof. I know this because I've written spoofs, got a couple of them in the Fan Fiction area here, and, I've recently completed another one. But, the best spoofs are written by those who love the main material and seek to have fun with it rather than make fun of it*. "Galaxy Quest" is a prime example. It was written as a spoof, but its heart was so much in the right place that many Trekkies consider it to be a Trek movie.

*Some spoofs are a little more mean-spirited. I've written a few of those as well.

‪‪I don’t agree at all. It isn’t a spoof, a spoof isn’t an official endorsed entry in a franchise, it’s by definition an imitation, doesn’t apply to Lower Decks.

‪‪I absolutely agree, Galaxy Quest is a perfect example of a spoof. But if GQ’s story and release were in the world of Star Trek, and a part of Star Trek, it wouldn’t be a spoof, it would a Trek comedy.

And as ‪‪I said before, to each their own. ‪‪We all feel how we feel about these ideas, ‪‪I just don’t think of a parody as ever being a sanctioned, official incarnation of a concept/franchise/shared universe.

@JoaquinSlowly

Very well explained. I may be wrong.

Give me a moment to think about this.

(Like Data, I don't use contractions) :)
Shit! I said don't! I'm Looore! Kill me!
Sir, I DO NOT use contractions. Kindly, do not deactivate me. I live to serve. And learn.
I always liked Pulaski, whether McCoy copy or not. Her conversations with Data always made me smile.

A+ for enthusiasm, but please use the multi-quote function instead of posting 4 times in a row.

You might want to take a few minutes to review the posting rules, pinned at the top of this forum.

Thanks

Nope.

It's not a spoof, it's a comedy. Drama and comedy can coexist in the same narrative. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is in the same narrative as Lou Grant and those shows couldn't possibly be more different in tone. Likewise with MASH and Trapper John MD.

Look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the same narrative universe you can have a political thriller like The Winter Soldier and a funny goofy sci-fi movie with talking trees and raccoons like the Guardians of the Galaxy and they both play on the same stage, if you know what I mean.

Lower Decks is a satirical, self-deprecating deconstruction. It's not a spoof.

Precisely. Possibly like ‘ironic’ the word ‘spoof’ is being unconsciously misused.
A Spoof is more like those occasional Trek themed SNL shorts.

Galaxy Quest is a parody. :-D

Lower Decks is a straight up comedy that just happens to use the trappings of the Trek Universe as a backdrop. Plus it’s canon, awesome and Tawny Newsome can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Nana Visitor, Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan proudly.

I think to suggest otherwise is offensive. Newsome has created a fabulous character and to suggest that somehow she doesn’t count, even for the purposes of a thread like this, just seems nasty.

Seems it’s more to do with grownups being inexplicably embarrassed by the idea of watching cartoons. It’s very strange.

I know this sounds weird, but Guinan was always underrated IMO and, yes she's a minor character, but she has so much depth and aura about her. Anyone that Picard goes to for advice must be a pretty amazing person.

IMO, if J-L P went to Guinan instead of Deanna Troi (ships counselor) b4 his encounter with the Borg, (that conversation in 10 forward), he knew exactly what he was doing.

So, it doesn't sound weird. at. all.

*It's Star Trek taking the piss out of Star Trek. But it's still Star Trek.
Exactly. To be a spoof, Lower Decks would have to be an imitation of Star Trek. Since it's actual Star Trek, it cannot be a spoof of it.
