Woman arrested for theater "Twilight" taping

Call me crazy... but maybe this shouldn't be a criminal offense... and maybe they should just toss the lady out of the theater for violating their policies

Ok. You're crazy.

As she didn't violate the theater's policies she broke the law. As recording copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder is akin to stealing.
It's also akin to pressing record on your VCR while watching a movie on pay per view.

Copyright infringement without monetary gain shouldn't be a criminal matter.

Ahh, but do we know that she wasn't going to gain monetarily from the tape?

We don't know that she was going to either.

The article of course was very light on details, but just guessing from the fact that it was a young woman seeing a Twilight move, she probably wasn't about to burn a few thousand DVDs and start pawning 'em on a street corner. The way this thing was written (that she had 2 minutes of footage), I wouldn't be surprised if she was taping a few of her favorite scenes on her cellphone or something. If they don't want to provide some facts, like what exactly she was taping it on, I'm going to view it as over the top bullshit...

The fact is this woman deserved to be caught. Whether you agree with taping films, you don't care, or you think people who pirate should be locked up, the fact remains that more and more theatres are looking for and catching people in the act. Ushers are being equipped with nite-vision cameras. And I think it's only a matter of time before theatres institute a "check your cell at the door" policy (an idea that, after having had movies interrupted several times by people's cell phones going off, I heartily approve of).

Never mind if you feel it's good, bad, or indifferent, these days even attempting it is as idiotic as downloading porn at work. 10 years ago you could get away with it because it wasn't on anyone's radar and they didn't know how to detect it. Well now they do. And those who still do it deserve to get caught just because they're being stupid, above and beyond whether what they're doing is right or wrong. It's no different than some yahoo making jokes about bombs in an airport and wondering why he's suddenly thrown in jail. We've been told again and again it's a bad idea and people will act upon it. Lugging a video camera (any size) in a theatre is taking the same sort of risk.

Not paying for something you wanna see sort of is monetary gain, isn't it? In case she was gonna put it online, or whatever. Although I don't understand who'd wanna watch cams.

If this chick had any brains she would claim that she was sooo in love with Robert Pattersun that she just wanted a 2 minute clip to go home and rub one out over and over till the tape wore out...
They'd all laugh and she could go home without having to do 3 years Hard Time.

Ushers are being equipped with nite-vision cameras.

Is this being done to improve the video quality of pirated movies during night scenes?
Nah, any of you really good bootleggers are ushering at the small theaters and running a tripod mounted Digicam-- with audio input straight off the sound system.....uh...well not that I known anyone that has or would do such a clearly illegal thing

What about TV shows? Or watching something of Hulu?

That's a different situation isn't it? The producers of said material on Hulu have given their permission for their works to be viewed there. The person viewing them has the producers' permission to watch the work through that medium. However, surreptitiously recording footage in the theater does not indicate any kind of approval; in fact, it implies the opposite.

Plus Hulu and Television makes their money of commercials, where as movies make it on ticket sales.

And I believe the US court system has ruled that videotaping or the equivalency is not a copyright violation.

What a stupid bitch. Hope they throw the book at her. I can just see the prison dykes laughing their asses off at her taste in movies as they're fisting her.
