it's handled well, and it's not like Cyke hasn't taken hiatuses before when Jean died.

Apparently, it is.
I loved how he was portrayed in Earth X. Especially how he wiped the walls with that group of circus mutants. Nothing better than a badass with a moral compass. The two aren't exclusive.

One of the reasons I quit getting X-Men way back in the day was when Claremont wrote Scott out of the book so he could continue his writer's love affair with Mohawk Storm. This new cartoon sounds like it's following the lead of the movies in not getting the character at all.

They deserve a little bit of credit for having at least acknowledged that this is a big change. As of the most recent episode, though (in which Cyclops was impressive), it's pretty clear that Cyclops's and Wolverine's personalities and roles have been essentially exchanged - down to Cyclops stealing Wolverine's bike. As much as I'm a huge fan of James Marsden, I almost wish Hugh Jackman had played Cyclops instead of Wolverine, so we'd still have a Cyclops called by his own name instead of Wolverine's.
I quite enjoyed the X-Men movies, but one of my biggest complaints was how they handled Cyclops.
With only a couple of exceptions, he was continuously owned by bad guys. He was a whiny bitch for most of the movies, and then they killed him.
My impression of Cyclops from the comics I read in the early 90s and the animated series was that, while he did indeed have very strong emotions for Jean and they were sometimes exploited, he was the field leader of the X-Men. He was Xavier's right hand man so to speak. He was a rock and the glue that helped keep all of these strong personalities together (along with Prof X).
With the exception of a small handful of scenes, he was an EMO little bitch in the movies. Couldn't stand him. They got most of the characters down pat , it's hard to ignore the feeling that, once again, his character was sacrificed just to make Wolverine look even more bad-ass. And I love Wolverine, I'm not coming from some anti-fan boy place here.
