Woe to Sarek's Woe

I wonder, before he died, if Sarek ever thought this to himself;

"Holy shit. Here I am, Mister hardass Vulcan, and I father two sons. One of whom is %100 Vulcan and totally out of his mind and gets exiled for not even believing in Logic. The other son is %50 Vulcan, and though raised as a Vulcans, ends up living the most illogical life. I demand a DNA test on both of them!!!"

Makes you wonder if Sarek was really their father after all. And if he was? Poor man. They sure fell far from the tree I bet he concluded.

But then again; he did have his most memorable meld with a human and let it beknown that he "LOVED" his son/wife. Sarek..oh sarek.

Regret would have been illogical. ;)

Then again, I suppose, so was marrying a human.

He had a heart condition. As a Romulan, you of all people should know how... energetic (and demanding) Vulcanoid females can be in the sack. Sarek married Amanda not out of love but out of self-preservation.

You may be right...But have you ever imagined Sarek/Admanda having sex< It is like imagining your grand parents doing it...it just doesn't connect!

Sarek a s a character stopped making sense after ST4. Shatner did exactly what Fontana had hoped to avoid, by giving Sarek another child and previous wife. Fontana said she made Spock an only child and Amanda Sarek's only wife to avoid the many Spockian and half-Spockian brothers and sisters that would appear in later episodes. Shatner just wasn't a good ST writer or director so had to resort to a flimsy character and plot to try to evoke emotion from the audience. TNG then further screwed up the character, and Vulcans in general. If they had let his character in the hands of his creator, Fontana, we would see a Sarek who actually made sense, had consistency, and regularity to his personality.

As it is, the character is great until ST5. If you ignore everything about the character post ST4, he makes sense. Later writers just didn't get the character, Vulcans and were not as creative as the earlier writers were. Watch how the inconsistency of character arises in this youtube:

I couldn't disagree more..I find SYBOK to be the most interesting Vulcan outside of Spock.

I didn't see anything wrong with Sarek's usage in TNG. "Sarek" was one of Lenard's best performances (and he had Patrick Stewart to work with).

i actually find Sybok's existance to be eminently logical.

consider; Vulcan children are shown to be betrothed in "Amok Time" at a very early age. it seems highly improbable that Sarek should not be so betrothed. Therefore, one can easily assume that Sarek and She mated, had Sybok and then maybe Sybok's Mom buggered off to Kolinahr training. Thus, she 'divorces' Sarek as part of her leave-taking and he then meets and marries Amanda at a later time, having Spock.

:vulcan:

or did i just enjoy reading "Sarek" by Anne Crispin too much?

Well..life finds away. And if Sarek had a 'love' child then I appreciate him even more...I like SYBOK for the reasons you don't. He doesn't quite fit in with the Vulcans..well, I know a lot of people like that here, in reality. And if Sarek had a black sheep then I think Sarek has a little more depth to explore....

As for Fontana? I know she had her wishes, but she isn't God, nor is RDM. They are just writers.

I mean do the Vulcans believe in IDIC among themselves? Or is it a lot of hot air??

A good writer can make a character interesting without making him inconsistent.

Well...not so sure what you mean by that. But I hope you don't mean that all vulcans should act a certain way.

And actually inconsistent characters are a STAR TREK regularity. Or haven't you been watching..
