WIP Matt Jefferies Starship Concept

You dont have to alter it on our account, you were copying the concept sketch and doing an accurate job of interpreting it. If anything, I'd say build a different model altogether once you're finished, rather than alter this one. The ball/sphere thing can work, but you have to get the proportions and layout right. The mainly spherical ship however, that would be a real challenge.

Wellllllll......

I would suggest that the "phallus" issue is directly tied to proportions.

Consider the Pioneer and Farragut class Earth Starships featured on Masao's Starfleet Museum.

Granted, the arrangement isn't the same as the ship featured in this thread, but it indicates to me that the sphere-into-tube-hull arrangement doesn't have to be a joke.

I've never been a huge fan of any of his ships, for the same reason... they all look phallic. Besides that, there is almost nothing tying those "tube ships" of his to anything remotely Trek-like in design. Some of the TOS-era ships are quite nice, but I never saw the allure of those Starfleet Museum tube ships.

That's exactly what I did. I kept the original, but then made this one a few minutes ago. I wanted to add some more familiar design elements to it.

I'm not a big fan of most of the ships in that starfleet museum site.

Anyway... Here's the newer version.

I appreciate the artistry, but I guess I'm a dirty old man (and so's the Mrs) because we both see too much sexual imagery in the work.

However, if you turned the engines around, flattened the sphere somewhat, you can see some likness to the U.S.S. Grissom from STIII. Compare the fourth image from your version to the bottom left from this webpage.

Must say I like the new direction a bit more! I still think it's a hard concept to do because of the shape. I guess more details could fix it's complex. :)

The mainly spherical ship however, that would be a real challenge.

I got it all layed out in my head! Just no time to get it done, or no justification to use so much time on a sphere. I need a good purpose for a ship with a spherical appearance and then I might do it. (Late 24th century that is...) Please think of something!

I like this a LOT more. I'd blunt the nose but other than that I can see this actually working. Good job

As always, great work.

This new version looks like an early Romulan design. Paint it green and you're there.

It wouldn't be the first "flying hot dog" Romulan design:

You don't mean totally flat, just take away that sharp point?

When I saw this concept with the very airplane looking section, my immediate thought is that this ship section can break away and make an emergency planetary landing... Does anyone else see that?

Ah yes. I like this one. Then again, we've seen similarities with the TOS and pre TOS era designs. Someone meets a new species (for good or bad), their techs see a new design, study it, and impliment changes to their design strategies. I suppose...

Correct, more rounded, less pointy.

^

It was first seen in the Spaceflight Chronology book, and later in the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

In the Making of Star Trek, we see tube shaped pre-daedalus designs. One looked to be a huge upper stage with shuttle bay doors even--this years before STS. It might be nice to model those. One seemed to have a flatbed aerogel slab, like it was meant to assemble/collect spent spacecraft.
