WIP Matt Jefferies Starship Concept

Patrickivan

Fleet Captain

Here is another of my interpretations of Matt's concept ships. It reminds me of Blake's 7 for some reason...

Anyway. I made this ship at about 60 metres long (excluding nacelles). I still have to add a wee bit. The main command cylinder is 30 metres long and 10 metres high.

I think that if I were to include this ship in the Star Trek universe, I would make it a small cargo ship maybe. Perhaps it would even be a civilian design.

You work on this ship is very nice... but I can see why it was not used on-screen. It has a certain um... "look" to it that could probably be taken the wrong way...

Just don't show any pics of it entering a wormhole, docking port, or attacking from behind, and we'll be okay...

I think they were right to discard it at an early stage, its bizarre, ungainly and somewhat offensive. It looks like something Terry Gilliam would make for a Monty Python animation.

Heh- I expected some comments on that, and believe me, I made some too...

But there are some technical merits to the simplicity of the design. A sphere and cylinder offer some very strong design points.

As for it's background. This is a cargo ship CV 2001-1, currently under command of Captain Johnson Wang. This week's cargo consist primarily of hotdogs, mayo, and starship lubrication.

What sketch is this based off?

I never saw it in printed form and found it in the titlecard of a Gabe-Koerner-reimagined-Enterprise video.

As we know, designs such as the beloved Big E evolve from such sketches - the artist draws tons of drawings, the director/producer points and says. "I like where this piece is going, develop this some more," and the cycle repeats.

Instead of modeling this schnozz ship faithfully, I wonder what we'd end up with if we pretend Roddenberry had pointed at IT instead of the sketch that ended up as the Big E?

If that design had been the basis for the Enterprise lineage, then Picard's ship would have had the biggest shaft and balls of all the Enterprise's...

"These are the voyages of the starship Dildoprise. Exploring strange new ..." ;)

Sorry but I never could warm up to that concept sketch.
