WIP Fast-Attack Fighter

Klondike307

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I'm trying to bridge the gap between Masao's Starfleet Museum ships from the Romulan War, specifically the Minotaur, and what we ended up getting with Enterprise for the same time period. I figure it could function as an older earth ship brought out or retirement for the Romulan War. As always comments and criticisms are more than welcome!

I actually like it better with your nacelles. It gives the ship a little more of a "NX Alpha" look, but I think the nacelles need to be a little more NX-Alpha-like for it to work.

Neat little spaceship.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Update: I changed the nacelles to something closer to the NX Alpha thanks to Wingsley's suggestion. I also added thrusters, impulse engines, and started on hull detail. More to come!

I finished texturing it and adding more detail to the hull. I'd say over all I'm about 90% done at this point. Let me know what you all think so far or what needs to change.

Pretty cool! The only problem I have is that you call it a "fighter", which in my mind implies a one- or two-man vessel about the size of a shuttlecraft. Judging from the scale (the man standing on the pylon) and the weaponry this carries, I would guesstimate this has a crew of at least 15 and probably more like 20 to 25. I would think this fits best into the Corvette size class, or perhaps in the Fast Patrol Craft aka Gunboat class.

Thank you! I went with "Fighter" at first because that's what the Minotaur, which I based it on, is listed as. But I agree, Fast Patrol Craft does sound better and is much more accurate. Also, the crew size is ~10.

Lovely detail, will you be doing any interior views?
Thanks! After I finish the exterior of the model, I plan to render basic rooms where there are windows instead of the generic yellow glow there is now. I will also get around to doing a cross-section.

UPDATE: Deck Plans
I started with B-Deck (middle of the three) which contains Engineering, Cargo Bays 1&2, Thruster Control, Officers Quarters, the head, Captains Quarters, Sick Bay, The Bridge, Port and Starboard Phasers, Deflector Control, and various other systems.

Love where you're going with this! However, I see room for improvement, as on a ship this small every inch counts. For example, I wouldn't think it'd have a dedicated sick bay, but rather would use the mess room table to lay an injured / sick crewman on for treatment. See the TV show Deadliest Catch or the movie Alien as a good example of this. You could tighten up the width of the corridor to a meter or even 3/4 meter. On the bridge, I'd think about getting rid of the Center Seat and have a two-seat helm where the Pilot/Commander sits with his co-pilot.

It is, in the end, your design and not mine, so the above suggestions are offered for use or not as you feel. ;-)

I realize that Masao, like everyone else, has been using the more "traditional" linear deckplan for these pre-TOS designs for ages, but doesn't it seem like it would make more sense for a ship like this to have a vertical deckplan? That is, put the deflector dish at the "top" of the ship directly above the bridge and stack the decks as cylinders with the impulse engines being at the very "bottom." Something like the 1970s Skylab.

This would provide something of a design evolution towards the more traditional designs we're used to; the single turbolift would simply run the length of the ship from bow to stern.

The problem with that design is people then expect it to land on end. As in standing on the warp nacelles.

1) That's a PROBLEM? How is it supposed to take off and land again if not using the impulse engine? (on the back of the ship?) Vertical takeoff and landing would require quite a bit of power for a ship this size

2) Would a ship this size even bother to "land" on anything?

The Nostromo had a Sick Bay. They didn't use the mess hall as med stop until the thingie ripped out of John Hurt's chest.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of getting blood all over my food. Or food all over my blood.

It's been eons since I've seen that movie, but I really thought that scene was in the mess hall. Still, the point stands: this is a small ship, so every square centimeter matters.

1) Why would a ship this size even need to land, except in an emergency. It's essentially a PT boat in space. They may dock, but they never go up on the beach unless it's absolutely necessary.

2) Exactly. See 1) above.
