Winter is coming! Game of Thrones has a teaser!

I might have to cut out my own tongue if I thought I had ruined even a page of ASOIAF for someone.

Q: How does the show work? Is the whole first season just book 1?
Yes, the first season adapts the first book. The plan is that if the show is a success and runs the distance each book will get at least a season for its adaptation. George R.R. Martin has said that it's possible that some of the later books might get more than one season.

The third book is about 1100 pages (at least the paperback edition I have). I don't see how it is possible to compress it to one 10-episode long season, without severe cuts to the story.

I'm reading I, Claudius and Claudius The God now, after watching the BBC series for something like 10th time. Those two books are ~1000 pages together - and the TV series took about one-third of them at most, leaving out many great scenes ... I can only hope that the cuts in Game Of Thrones case won't be as severe ...

Like most of the epic fantasy series out there as ASoIaF goes along it collects more characters and more importantly character viewpoints. Which as things go on just drags the story's pace slower and slower. The TV show could easily cut some of those character perspectives out to make sure that each book fits in a 10-12 episode season.

I don't particularly like it, but honestly there is no way they're going to be able to juggle the immense cast of characters in the TV series to the satisfaction of readers of the book series.

That is, if they even follow the books that closely, which isn't clear yet.

^ They could realistically condense/edit out a lot of the pages in the later books, I think. Most of the secondary characters are just filler, basically (trying to avoid spoilers here) being just lackies of the main families.

They're equivalent to the one-off "hit men" in some of the Sopranos episodes, if you use that analogy. Sure, there's more back-story there if you want to go digging, but really just a quick mention could be done, and move on.

Excellent news and quite the nice teaser, all in all.

Cheers,

The pilot script follows the first 80 pages or so pretty much as close as I've ever seen an adaptation. Unfortunately this makes the few changes they did make stand out all the more blatantly. Mostly just a line or conversation here or there, but other than the Tyrion introduction, just about every change I recognized was for the worse. I read the script about 6 months before they filmed it so some bits might have been smoothed out but I think it is safe to say either way that they're staying pretty damn true to the books.

I hope you're right, and I hope they do stay close to the books.

But one minor change in the pilot, will lead to two minor changes in the second episode, and they'll continue to build on each change in turn. The further along the series goes, the further it will deviate from the books.

There will come a point when they have to just follow the books in spirit not in actual dialogue, plot and sundry details.

But I'm still hoping it blows us all away.

There's been some more casting news over the last week:

Roy Dotrice will play Grand Maester Pycelle

Kristian Nairn will play Hodor

Finn Jones will play Loras Tyrell

I saw Kristian's audition tape a while back and he seems like he will do nicely. He doesn't have quite the soft and gentle and 'innocent' look I expected of Hodor, but he has the size and can pull off the blank faced idiocy he needs and once they get the tattoos and piercings off him and throw some shaggy hair on top it will probably help.

Lots of Game of Thrones news this week. New teaser, new 'making of' featurette and a production blog.

The 'making of' thingie gives us the most new stuff and some of it is pretty surprising, and a even bit disappointing in places. The Kingsguard seem to have very odd 'fantasy'(especially the helmet) armor that isn't even white, Mark Addy as Robert is even more unimpressive than I expected he would be, Tyrion lacks any of his oft-mentioned inhuman ugliness. . . but on the whole I would be lying if I didn't say I'm just about giddy over getting to see some actual footage from this show.

I'm really looking forward to this show. I love the books and what I've seen so far from the teasers looks awesome.

I liked what I saw. It's way to early to nitpick, we only saw 2 20-second long trailers and some behind-the-scenes footage (half of it probably from the pilot shoot). I'm sure the finished product will look great and there's no chance this show might fail.
