Winona Kirk's role on the Kelvin?

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Was she a visitor/passenger? Or a crew member? I wonder if she was a member of the medical department.

Her hospital gown/(medical division) maternity outfit looks woven, and she's wearing a similarly patterned sweater over it.

I wonder who poor George Jr stayed with during that time.

Would Starfleet assign husband and wife to the same ship back then, or was Winona en route to another safer location for Jim's birth?

I distinctly recall someone asking the writers this back in the day and they confirmed she's crew.

I remember cos I was annoyed cos she was a teacher in the novels that inspired the movie version of George Kirk.

Doesn't have to be starfleet. Some specialist etc.
Maybe at that time they had family's on ships.
But I do wish they would show George and Winona on SNW.

There are many reasons why she might have joined the crew which don't take away from her having been a teacher.

* enlisted to be near her husband (maybe George is in boarding school)
* decided to try something new
* been inspired by Christa McAuliffe - maybe Starfleet has its own "Teacher in Space" program
* on a sabbatical/maternity leave
* en route somewhere which the Kelvin could take her to

In TrekLit the general assumption was that she was a botanist and/or agronomist, and kept the family farm going. So presumably, her role aboard the Kelvin would involve plants.
