Windows XP: getting rid of C++ runtime error

I tried and failed to download andf install printer drivers for an old hp p1000 printer on my netbook, and I've since given up. I did the usual, in tath I went into control panel > system > hardware > devices and got rid of the printer form a list (it had a question mark next to it) Please tell me what to do to get rid of it!
Thanks

Wait, what are you installing and uninstalling? You want to delete a driver in order to use a different one?

Is it that XP keeps reassigning the old driver and not using the new one?

What process is the runtime error given by? You say you've removed the printer from control panel -- Are you sure it is the printer driver giving the error?

I would identify the process causing the error (use a tool like Process Explorer, free from the Microsoft website)

i can tell you what the error says now.

On the top frame of the error box it says "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
there is a red X. next to that is "Runtime error"
Below: "Program: C:\...
Then it suggests I contact the vendor or soemthing for more information

the bottom says:
The application has requested the function to terminate in an usual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

See that part where you have "Program: C:\..." ?

THAT is the part we need to see the rest of!

below that it says

If you think its a printer driver, go the the printer window, then pick 'server properties' from the 'file' pull down, go the drivers and remove the new in question. The driver can be removed directly from windows\system32\spool folders if you know the name of the driver.

Could be one of those HP's that tricks you into installing a printmanager. go to control panel/add remove programs and look for anything dealing with HP and remove it.
