Anyone catch the insane match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut? My brother brought it to my attention and said the fifth set was 47 all. I was completely confused for a minute, thinking he had to mean the 5th set was won 4-7. So I put the game on. Finally, it was called due to low light at 59-59.

Granted, watching the game was more like watching a train wreck than great tennis. Mahut had more hussle, Isner had a better serve. Both sides were too tired to play good tennis, though. I'm curious to see how long it lasts tomorrow.

Well, neither player is ranked that high. They probably weren't going to win the next one anyway and, after that battle, I'd imagine fatigue would be too much.

This match will have spanned 3 different days. I heard about it on the radio this afternoon. The previous record in a tie-break set was 20-18. I think the 5th set, timewise, is longer by itself than any previous match.

When i saw the scoreline 59 to 59 I thought i was in a dream.

From what I heard though the match was snooze-fest with neither players has the necessary return game to break the other person's serve.

Anyway, Isner won the match, taking the final set 70-68. Remember, today's play resumed at 59-59 - so the game continued for yet another 20 more games - for a grand total of 11 hours 5 minutes of play in the match.

And is now the best time to note that Andy Murray won his second round match today, in straight sets and in front of the Queen?

From Wikipedia (I know, not the most trusted of sites!):
"As of 2010, the Australian and French Opens, as well as Wimbledon, allow tiebreakers for all sets except the final set in each match. Of the four Grand Slam tournaments, only the U.S. Open utilizes the tiebreaker during the fifth set." I guess the US Open would be the exception to the rule.

What an amazing match. I thought the reception on my TV was going, believing that the score box was 'fuzzy' with so many outrageous numbers, then I realized they were both in the mid-fifties for games played in that set! Astonishing. Glad to be a witness for this, albeit on TV. Would have loved to have been there!!
