@Ryan Thomas Riddle pointed this out to me. Scenes from "World of Suzie Wong." with William Shatner, France Nuyen ("Elaan of Troyius"), & cast members from the Broadway show on the Ed Sullivan show broadcast 11/16/1958, 8 years before Star Trek hit the air.

If you pause at 1:33, he looks a LOT like Chris Pine.

You can see the resemblance in a few first season episodes as well. Especially when they styled Shatner's eyebrows a certain way.
